There have been a lot of firms wanting orphan works laws. Lots of money to be made there. From what I have read, the laws often don't require any proof of a search for an ower. Just the fact the have been "around" somewhere without any claim. Your recent Freelance Alert thread proves that sometimes business entities "obtain/store" works without an artists knowlege. Perfect "justifiable" reason to claim them as orphans.

And so the Capitalism Chain Saw finds another group of trees to clear cut. My read is that the Dark Side (Microsoft) had a hand in this......
Thanks for the heads up Bill. Wonder what kind of underhanded dealings are happening on this side of the pond?

Good news. You would be suprised how fast orphans are generated no matter how much you embed or watermark. If they want it, it is gone.
Frankly government is doing all kind of underhanded dirty under the table deals with special interests. Things must change. I vote for removing all doors in capital buildings and having all phone calls recorded and publicly accessable just for starters. Both parties, it does not matter as the whole culture stinks.

I don't follow copyright developments Over There---can anyone tell me what "Gowers" is? Assume it's a court decision...

There is no 'over there'.
If copyright can be stolen, how much does it matter where? Especially on the internet.
Cheers,

Roger,
With respect, where it's stolen/who it's stolen from can make a big difference if one has to go to court. Dissemination of materials on the 'net changes some of the rules, but not all. I'm just trying to get some sense of how the UK defines what is encompassed by "copyright."
