thread about light, instead of gear...

Light should not be taken lightly!

If you wanted "for talk and pics", perhaps you could have set the tone from the start, by actually talking about your picture, instead of just saying "here". Instead, you just posted a picture (nice, btw), but without any discussion yourself. So I don't think it's the fault of RFF you can't find the talk you can't find. Usually the initiator sets the kind of talk he/she has in mind. I didn't see any talk...

What talk did you have in mind?

Well, I'm starting to regret putting this out there. And yes, perhaps I should have said more about what I put up, although I'm not very comfortable talking about my own stuff. I have tried to respond to other people's work though but I've been completely swamped at work this week. I'm also not blaming RFF in the slightest. There's no blame or fault to assign. It's just a thread with some great images and text.

The big difference between the thread and the gallery is that at least people are looking and commenting, and more back and forth, which rarely happens in the gallery. This is an incredible forum, but I do wish there was more photo sharing and discussion beyond the gallery and people's test rolls. So even if it was just a wnw thread, IMHO that's better than nothing. Look at some of the incredible shots in this thread - I never would have seen any of them if i simply went through the gallery.

Don't worry. I'm really glad you started a thread which lead to see nice images. It's not that often here.
Please do it again!

I guess it's time for you to spend more time in the gallery then. 🙂 There are some great shots everyday in the gallery. It does happen in the gallery maybe not enough for some people, especially those that complain that nothing happens in the gallery. but then those that are complaining aren't commenting over there, so...

More photo sharing? There are thousands of images in the gallery waiting your perusal.

Sure there are great images in this thread but how are the comments made here any different from those in the gallery? At least in the gallery I've SEEN attempts at constructive criticism. Go over there and help get it started

The only way the gallery gets more response and comments is for people to go there and spend time. If we're here looking at images forum threads, then we're not there looking at images.

I'm not coming down hard on you. The last thing we need are more never-ending w/nw threads with humungous inline photos that require scrolling to view, and quotes that repeat humungous inline photos that require scrolling to view, when we have a managed gallery with size and upload limits, designed specifically for viewing and commenting. 😕

anyway rant ends here.

🙂

I strongly disagree. W/NW makes viewing stuff more pleasant, around a theme. You can see how people read the theme...etc...
I do agree though on the fact that replying to a post with the photo in it is not the best thing to do in a N/NW thread.
In my humble opinion, the gallery here isn't very easy to navigate here, I'd rather go to Flickr for that kind of browsing.
However, Forum are great for N/NW... and anyway, it's not like there are 20 new a day on this forum.

I respectfully disagree Ray. W/NW threads has a very important advantage over browsing the gallery and it's the ability for a number of photographers to ad-hoc come together and post photos on a certain theme (subject, gear used, etc, etc). I've seen much stronger discussions in w/nw threads than I have ever seen in the gallery (and one of the fundamental reasons for that is I think the lack of notification on new comments in the gallery).

I do however agree that when quoting someone one should exclude any IMG tags so that the images doesn't repeat.

(IN-thread images rules by the way!) ;-)

Oh and in ones options one can DESELECT 'show images' which causes all large-in-thread-images to be displayed as links. Great option for those that for some reason don't want to see the larger images.

You'll have to click on the link of course to see the image but all thumbnail-link users seems to do that anyway so it shouldn't cause any extra work 😉

I love that shot of the flag/sky Todd. Great colors considering you were pointing darn near at the sun.

thanks Scott.

Schlapp,
Great image!

If nothing else this thread has made me even more aware of how light can add to an image, great examples guys.

I can see that point of view, Rich, and that's why I see the potential in w/nw thread, and stand by my suggestions for improvement (see above).

This has been my experience with a dozen or so w/nw threads: someone has a picture and thinks up a w/nw thread (sometimes pretty esoteric), a bunch of people start posting in-line images, links, thumbnails, most of the images receive no feedback, while a few receive more feedback, some images don't get seen at all because they are either links or thumbnails 😉 , some idle discussion surrounding equipment and film follows, the thread starts to die. Most of the people who posted recieved zero feedback or views. This is an improvement on the gallery?

At least in the gallery, posters have some assurance that the thumbnail of their image gets a view! 🙂

Any THIS is a greaaat discussion over beers at our upcoming meeting. 😉

I agree! 🙂 Lot's of great images in this thread. You nailed that flag shot really nicely, Todd.

Thanks for all the compliments, guys. Awesome compliment coming from someone like you, Joe. 😉

There's a lot of inspiration to be found in RFF.

I don't expect feedbacks from a W/NW thread. I just want to see nice images and contribute if I feel like I have a pic or two worth putting in the flow.
I would say that the gallery is the place if you want feedback but not the W/NW.
That's the way I see it at least...

i don't see w/nw threads as a place for feedback either, not that it can't happen there.

maybe start a thread that says 'w/nw feedback requested' for shots that you want feedback on. then everyone knows the expectations.

ray, 'someone like you' ?
is that a good thing?
