Three Merrill Comparison

stop picking on the dp2m!

stop picking on the dp2m!

i may be sensitive since i only have the dpm2, but the reviewer seems to shortchange it by assuming that people only prefer wide or tele. the reviewer also overlooks higher iso B/W, which really extends the usefulness of the sensor. if anything, i would argue the dp2m is the one to have and the other two are the more optional choices. :D

otherwise, good review. ;) it mentions not having image stabilization - i would love the dp3m with IS. sigma has OS technology so hopefully they can figure out a way to use it in the dps.

Thanks for the link..

I am steadily been warming up to the dp3m, about the time Jon posted his dp3m thread. Haven't bought one yet... Waiting for the price to drop to where the dp1 and dp2 Merrill's price is today at 799.

I would actually keep all three, but since I don't like carrying more than two bodies and normal range is my preferred formal length, I would pair around the dp2m instead.

I could also c doing a 28/75 pairing in certain situations.

Yes, using a tripod will give u the best results for this camera, but Sigma did a good job on this camera in terms of the little things for the photographer..such as:
- the focus OK led is at top edge, where u can glance down if u have a ovf attached
- a focus scale when u go into mf mode plus
-- depth of field info around the focus point
-- mag capability on center area when ael is off and press the center button
- b&w mode even when only using raw image
-- new fw pairing w/ spp sw is really good
-- the rear LCD can be cycled to 5 different modes
--- off
--- info only
--- image only w grid if u enable it
--- image plus info
--- image plus info plus histogram
- three raw images size on top of three Jpg sizes
-- my default is medium size raw unless I c a picture that warrants large raw
So using an ovf is my preferred way of shooting w/ this camera.. But I do use it on a tripod.

The biggest mistake they made on this camera is NO cable release socket or electronic cable release (I agree w/ the article).

W/ the new fw and new version of spp, the default value for noise at 0 for all three noise values (chroma, luminous, and banding) seem to work better than the previous version of spp, so I am going to start batch processing the tiff conversion from now on.

From my high iso experiments, the new fw looks like it improved some issue for b&w by one stop from my previous comfort level, but color is is marginally better.
