Thypoch lenses from China

Thypoch are a subdivision of DZO, a recognized maker of decent quality mid tier cinema lenses. Interestingly, Thypoch now have a set of their Simera lenses in cine lens form, with focus and aperture rings designed for focus pulling gear. All lenses are t1.5, and are in 28, 35, 50 and 75 focal lengths. Sony E-mount only at the moment, but there's talk they will release them in M mount.

I have learned a long time ago to value my time, because asking for a refund has never worked so far.
The first 1.25 seconds were enough to understand the whole marketing ploy.

You really went on for the whole 10 minutes? 🤣

Wow, can you ever review a book in a hurry!

You can tell Mr. Herbert Spencer that Mr. Ororaro has made the very, very, very best choice by sticking with Leica.

Thanks in advance.

My Eureka arrives in an hour or so. Today the PNW has winter sunshine, a rare event. Hopefully the lens will get here while the sun is still out and I can get out and try it. And maybe learn something. It will be on the M9, the standard for testing around here.

OK, here is a shot upriver this late afternoon with the new Thypoch Eureka. Not a really good test but I had to first shop for victuals and gas up the pony. More tests down the line.

This one to show sharpness. Focus on an RF is getting more difficult. At 39 how can that be? ;o)

OK, my pinhead appraisal. At less that US$500 this lens is not expensive. And as others have pointed out this is a retro copy (TTH Planar for the Reid Leica copy as I understand) of a good lens so it has a good pedigree. Now you do not have to face the dicey world of old lenses: scratches, fungus, haze, delamination. I had some grittiness focusing but that was with the lens collapsed so you can write that off as a problem. It isn't a problem. It functions smoothly and seems to be on the money. I was shooting late in the afternoon, 4:00 to 4:45 and my eyes had trouble getting focus right. I will try tomorrow.

Anyway, in short it seems like a good bang for the buck. Color and sharpness are good. I will run a test down the road between this, the Elcan, the SBS, the CZJ '43 and the '57 KMZ J8 and my other Planar, the Cooke Amotal. I am searching for a good inside test site. "Tape at 11:00."

Thanks boojum, it seems a good lens at a good price. It would be a nice match for a Barnack except for the fact that it’s only in M mount as far as I can see 🙁

A visit to the LLL website revealed that they were originally thread mount with an adapter. I have no idea what happened with that but it would mean there would be some on the used market.

Here's another pic showing how it handles the shading of curves and micro contrast. It is a sharp lens, when I get it in focus. ;o)

Is this an easy mod or does it need real machining. Brians collapsible looks great @Sonnar Brian is this based on a pre-war Sonnar mount?
Yes- I have several collapsible mounts left over from converting 5cm F2 Sonnars to Leica mount. They will not fit a Jupiter-8 barrel.
This is an easy fit, no real machining required. You must grind down the aperture ring, but a file and sand paper does the trick.

Thanks Brian, this may be a winter day experiment ! I seem to have built up a few collapsible Sonnars with bad front elements so it may be worth sacrificing one.

Or just blow the $500 on the Eureka. I understand the enjoying the conversion project. But that would be impossible out here so the Eureka was my answer to collapsible. I'm testing that this afternoon. Yes! Field tests of a collapsible lens. LOL It will be convenient to stuff it and the M9 into my jacket pocket and go.
