Leica should always have a flagship "M' digital camera that was built to look just like the classic M Leicas.
But what's stopping them from developing a range of other "M" mount cameras with vastly different designs, made of various materials, with other functions, etc?
Those that want a Classic M could always have one with the latest sensor and doo-dads, everyone else could just buy another M mount camera.
If Leica doesn't do it, other manufacturers will, eventually. Leica should do it, try to keep the prices within a sane level, and they would also sell a load of new lenses to go with them too.
Leica don't want to sell a load of lenses or keep the prices within a sane level.
Their strategy is the exact opposite of this.

I don't think so. If the M9 had not sold in large quantities, Leica might be bankrupt now.
Like I said, keep the high prices on the flagship stuff, dump the PanaLeicas and make some reasonable M-mount stuff.

Leica is a victim of its past success and therefore it can never change, if it did, it will no longer have that fetishist pull as it does right now due to its heritage and brand recognition.
Nostalgia sells today and Leica is the epitome of nostalgia when it comes to photography. A Leica M reminds people of a time when the world was a simpler place, when photojournalists were glamorous celebrities, when a lot of poor people had no access to smart phones and youtube.

People keep saying this - but it has already changed. Look at the S-system. That's no nostalgia piece.

That's why no one bought the S system, it was not a nostalgia piece.

Come on, that's an ultra specialized camera for studio work. Some of them are out there, quite a few just for rent, like PhaseOne digital backs or AlienBee lights, but it is unreasonable to think many people would buy that for a casual use. I wonder whether, now that the same number of megapixels can be bought for 9th of the price, a new S3 body will come out...ok, just curiosity, that's out of my budged and need anyway.

I thought they couldn't make them fast enough. I bet Hasselblad and Phase One/Mamiya are looking very closely at what Leica is doing with the S. And IMO, it was a good decision to leave the R series behind for good and move up towards MF.
