Time for thread images to grow up?

I see a lot of people posting great shots to threads but at very small size ( some 600-500 px) and would appreciate a larger size for viewing. Only when a file is at least 800px on the long side can I really get any appreciation for it.

It seems most people should be viewing at a fairly high resolution theses days (on your main device), wouldn't it help if everyone posted a reasonably large file? I am use machines with a res of at least 1920x 1200, and I realize that may be a bit more than the median. But aren't most people past the 1024x768 level these days? Or are people worried about stolen images?

The max size for attachments on RFF is 600 pixels, and a lot of people choose to upload images as an attachment. It is a storage and bandwidth issue.

I host images on another site, and most often use 1024 as the max dimension. I'm sure it causes scrolling on a number of machines. For the project work, I want the detail shown. For images using hacked lenses, I also like to show some detail.

Depending on which computer I'm using- I have to scroll.

800px on long side is good standard and I'm always posting in such dimension.

Wide images cause irritating horizontal browser scrolling because the forum software isn't configured to revert to regular width afterward (unlike the LUF forum for example). A computer screen isn't the best for viewing photographs anyway.

Yes, the scrolling is irritating, but tolerable.

A computer screen may not be the best vehicle for viewing photographs but it is far and away the most widely used. It is also the only practical way to share images on RFF which, after all, is made possible by computers.

I have always found a computer screen to be best for viewing internet forums! 😉 I didn't realize that the site didn't adjust back after scrolling (I can't remember having to scroll).

That's a good point - I always link to an outside site and wasn't aware of the limit.
