The M8.2 is a MUCH improved camera over the M8
Sorry, I disagree completely. The M8.2 has/had nothing to offer that is/was in my opinion worth upgrading or trading for.
Will see what the M9 brings to the table but I will certainly not part with my M8. No matter what my next investment will be.
>Feel free to convince me otherwise, (and if you do I've got a nice Mac SE/30 with 36 MB

I still have my Xerox 820-II, 4MHz Z80a, 64KByte RAM, two 320K 5.25" floppy drives. $2,400 in 1980. I used to write image processing software on it using FORTRAN 66 and Macro-80. I rewrote the Multiply and Divide routines that the FORTRAN Library used. Got a 2x speedup. I downloaded LANDSAT 4 data to it.

not a problem. different people see different cameras differently ----along with everything else for that matter.
I traded my M8 when the 8.2 was announced, and stayed with the RD1. Just picked up a used 8.2 under USA warranty at a low price thanks to the M9.

To get back to the original post, if you are planning on selling your M9 do it in the next ten days, after that what you will be able to get for it will drop by at least 25%. My Leica dealer tells me he expects to get a lot of trade in M8s and 8.2s once the M9 is announced...

Time may tell, but I am keeping mine.
Ditto. This sort of speculation can only help second-hand merchants.

If you look at the expected prices for the S2..23K USD ! Ok so just for grins let's say that a M9 should pop up. It will almost also be a joint venture production deal also. So now we see a hybrid camera concept. That will either anger the faithful Leica Digital users. While trying to attract new age shooters.
So it's like the "Good new.. Bad news" comedy act. But in the end the cost will be well above the current M8.2 bodies. So again you looking at a deal where you might be paying for a 7500-10K for a full frame RF M body.
Where is the value added benefit? Oh that's right you get the priviledge of paying more...just to prove your loyality to Leica ?
What Crap!

Wouldn't say I see everything different. Really like the CV lenses I bought from you.
Anyhow, the screen on my M8 doesn't have a scratch after 2 years of use, so why should I need sapphire instead? Yes, the cover material is a bit slippery but since I use the M8 grip and a Thumps Up, a different cover wouldn't make much of an improvement. The shutter noise never bothered me at all. Don't find it loud nor did I ever not press it because of fear getting noticed or disturbing someone. Frankly, I don't even use the new, quieter advance setting that came with the last firmware.
The 'S' setting (S as in Stupid) is for people who don't know how to zone focus. Again, completely unnecessary. (Somebody from Leica US told me once, the only reason why it's in there was to attract more people to buy the camera. People who are afraid otherwise of using a manual camera.)
Last but not least, the frame lines in the M8.2 are more accurate. Maybe they are not that much out of whack in my M8 but it never bothered me much. Or maybe I just got used to it.
The only thing that might be nice to have would be a renewed warranty. Oh well.
Back to the M9. I will wait and see what the new M has to offer. Hey, maybe it is just an announcement that the M9 will be ready for next years Photokina? Who knows.
I am in the market right now for a new system. Front runner as of right now is the Phase One P40+. Not sure about the S2 yet. Find it actually too expensive for a tweener camera and it's also not much of a system. Will attend a seminar on Sept. 11 where I'll get to see it and hopefully pictures taken by it (or better can take some shots for myself and scrutinize them on my computer).
Frankly, I hope the M9 will surprise me. Depending on how good it is, it might safe me a bundle.
/h
PS: In any way I won't sell my M8. Love the thing too much. Maybe I'm too sentimental but I won too many awards with it to simply trade it in for something new.

For me, I would consider BUYING an M8, if the M9 comes out.
Reason being, I can't afford Leica's. My only Leica is an M4-P, at $700, that's about all I can justify for a cult rangefinder film body - that works with some rather exquisite lenses - If I was really pinching - I would opt for the CL, but that's a whole other topic of rationalization . For digital, I use a studio Mamiya Phase One digital back. And for studio - sorry to say, I can not imagine that even an M9 would fulfill our needs for a digital work flow (I work for Weiden & Kennedy in Portland, Nike is one of our clients) - we wirelessly have our file sent to G-Safe, and then they are programatically sent (FTP I presume) to a network location, we don't do the post processing, there is a staff that does all that. - We spend a lot of time with lighting, thats our real job, if you ask me, the digital image acquisition - Oh yeah, I guess there is an adequate enough capturing device to do the job, no love for it, but it's there, on a remote controlled arm, and we can move it all around the studio, we have software to pre image - that works with our lighting.
So you see, an M camera is pretty much for pleasure for me, and 5-7K ? Unless your getting paid for your images, that's an expensive hobby, I would suggest taking that and putting it into your Fidelity IRA or Roth - great time to put money into index funds.
98% of photographic equipment deprecates in value, and digital camera's ? - rapidly - Point one camera out to me that has not lost value. Sure, if you enjoy fondling gear, and you get that much pleasure out of rubbing your fingers across a digital rangefinder from Solms Germany ? .. Then far be it for me, on how to tell you how to hold onto your money.
You see, I wait, for gear to become avail cheap, let the early adopters get their thrill of being first to buy, to hold, to fondle, a new piece of gear, then in a couple of years, maybe they are going through a divorce, or need the money, I'm waiting - patiently - for them to list it on Ebay. Heck I got the Panasonic G1 for $300, and it's a lovely little camera, and it's quite a kick to put on CV or Leitz lenses. Although truthfully I see very little gains by using manual focus legacy lenses on that camera, lower stop's - yeah, but compared to the kit lens ? not much, but it's small, and I got my cheap thrills by bringing it to a wedding this summer with a 90mm f2, pre ASPH, yep Canadian, got it for 450, that's how I roll ....
So you see, I lurk here, and enjoy all the fuss about a new digital camera that might be available soon, On my timeline, that means, oh, in about 5 years, I might be able to get one for $1200, That is, unless, Zeiss Ikon goes FF digital, or Cosina - and markets one for sub $2,000. But please, continue, discussing, how much you might sell your M8 for

Excellent post!
I'm taking that some people do not think the price for a used M8 or M8.2 will fall that low.
I've worked as a computer engineer in the Optical Sciences Division and started out working the electronics of a 32-element thermal Infrared Digital Sensor in 1981. Realistically, nothing depreciates faster than Digital anything. It's always "yesterday's news" and it's not collectible. The new stuff marches on to a steady stream of progress, and the old stuff is not as capable as what replaces it. The old stuff will hopefully be as good as it ever was. But electronic components are not as easily repaired as mechanical works. You just can't flood clean it back into operation. Classic film cameras feel "classic" and that appeals to some- like me.
Buy a digital camera because you want it for the here and now, and know it is not the lifetime purchase of an M3 or MP. It's going to depreciate quickly as the new stuff supersedes it. My $12,000 DCS200 is worth about $50 these days, the $7,000 E3 worth maybe ~$100, and $6,500 D1x- at least most people have heard of those.
Checked my "Camera stuff account", could get an M9 if I wanted one. I suspect waiting a year will add an F1.1 Nokton for the same money.
