Tips for a newbie

Hi all,

I would like to try my own B&W film developing in order to scan negatives.

I have been reading allot on RFF and the wider internet, i have all these terms and equipment names buzzing around in my head now😕!!!

Is there any good equipment/chemicals starter kits that someone may be able to recommend?

Hi Stewart,

If it's equipment you're after Pattersons have a complete kit that includes a universal developing tank, spiral, thermom, measuring cylinders, film clips, print trays etc. It's roughly $200 AUD but would no doub't be a hell of a lot cheaper in the UK. Otherwise AP and Photolab, both generic chemical brands, also do similar packs at roughly half the price. The only additional equipment you would need would be storage bottles for your chemicals once they're made up. As for chemicals, might I suggest you try the kodak range to start with, they're easily accessible, easy directions to follow and very reasonably priced. Shop around on the internet first - some suppliers have starter or student kits.

As mentioned above, you really only need a tank, reels, thermometer, measuring cups and chemicals. Just jump in and have fun.

IIRC there are starter kits from less than US$50. All you need to add is developer and fixer. Maybe google can get you some useful results.

Good luck with it. If you have specific questions about particular steps, issues, methods, etc...ask away. It's good to just get started and see what happens, but you'll reach specific items as you go.
