In March/April (27-4) I shall be in Austin, Texas, staying with family for a family wedding; a city I have never visited before.

Does anyone have any useful photography recommendations?

Many thanks.

Nightlife along Sixth Street. Capitol Dome. LBJ library on the UT campus. Is Antone's still there?

Yes, by all means, hit 6th Street for some good shooting. However, there is a lot more to Austin than just 6th Street. I visit Austin a couple of times a year just for street shooting. You will love the place....

For street photography, try Sixth in the evening (as suggested above). During the day, though, I prefer the Congress Ave area, including where it intersects with Sixth.

If you can handle low-light photography, the Broken Spoke in South Austin is one of the premier Honky Tonks in the US.

There is always live entertainment and two-step dancing. The food is decent too.

The photographic opportunities are diverse and challenging.

PS Austin is hot... even in April. Carry an ample supply of water and drink it!

March-April means Bluebonnets, which means the Hill Country. There are many cityscapes worth of your time, but don't forget outside Austin, too. Several websites will provide wildflower reports/locations.

Don't forget the BBQ! For trendy, you'll need to wait in line at Franklin's a couple of hours, or go south of town to the Salt Lick.

Thank you one and all for responding, especially Austintatious for the flickr group link; it really is appreciated.

I shall certainly take up some of the suggestions. Austin looks to be a really fun place and having family there with local knowledge helps a lot, even if they're not photographers.

I'm very looking forward to Austin, and hope to post some black and white shots on my website.

I can't wait!

Brian,
Another 6th street vote
South Congress (south of the Bat Bridge) is interesting as is much of South Austin.

Driskill Hotel (1886) has memorable interior and exterior architectural features.
Bookpeople has a good photography book section.
+1 The Broken Spoke

Harry Ransom Center on the UT campus has an extensive Photography http://www.hrc.utexas.edu/collections/photography/
collection , including the first photograph, (Niepce 1827)

General weirdness abounds.
Austin is an island of blue in the sea of red that is Texas.
or swap the land/water metaphor around and it is
an oasis of blue in a desert of red. :)
