TMax Developer & Kodak Tri-X

Thanks for sharing your development process for tmax3200, chris! 🙂

So this means I will waste the extra developer poured in right? I don't intend to reuse the developer. For that matter, we shouldn't be reusing the developer right?

Vincent, glad I could help.

The extra developer is not a waste, it has to be there to get proper developing. If the cost of the extra 8 ounces of chemical is a big deal to you I guess you could get a one-reel tank. I wouldn't do that though. I strongly feel that you get more even and consistant development using twice as much chemical as you have film...so by my system you should use a 2 reel tank with one film and full of developer, or a 4 reel tank full of chemical for 2 films. Even Tmax developer is cheap on a per-tankfull basis. Diluted 1+7, a 32oz bottle of it gives enough developer to fill eight 4-reel tanks, or sixteen 2-reel tanks. So a $12 bottle of developer does 16 rolls of film. 75 cents a roll, and that's based on "wasting" developer by using more than 'needed'! Film costs $5-7 a roll depending on the type you buy; the tiny cost of developer isn't worth trying to skimp on when you risk ruining film that costs many times the cost of the chemicals, not to mention the time and money it can cost to reshoot something that comes out badly from poor processing.

Trius, what developing time and EI did you use with Rodinal, and what dilution? I have used Rodinal on TMY-2 but had to guess on a time and it was a little too much I think. Your result looks nice, might save me some trial and error experiment to try your time/dilution/EI. Thanks
Chris:

For TMY-2 I shoot @ 400, though often I am probably am a bit generous on exposure, without thinking about it.

1:100, 20min, 20C for that shot. 30sec initial agitation, then only agitated 3 gentle inversions every 3 minutes. These days I sometimes don't do any secondary agitation at all, but that can produce "interesting" halos with dark objects against lighter background.

For lower contrast/tonal range, I'd use 1:50 @ 11 min.

Hope this helps.

Earl

I need help. Just shot 2 rolls of triX pushed to 1600 but rated at 1200. May I know what developing time and process should I use? I am using tmax developer. TIA.
