I usually shoot this film at 800 EI. But I wanted to see what 6400 would result in. I was expecting to see more contrast, less shadow detail, and more grain. I was pleasantly surprized at the results.

Developed in Tmax Dev. 11 minutes and 30 seconds @ 72 degrees F. Agitate for first 30 sec., then 2 twist/inversions every 60 seconds.

Leica MP, 50/1.4 lux (pre-asph) at f/1.4

This is our greyhound, Zoomer, the 45-mph couch potato.

You were expecting less shadow detail than that? 😀

I've found pushing film does increase grain, but not by that much - this effect is greatly exaggerated in my book. Moving from Tri-X to TMZ definitely introduces more grain than pushing Tri-X 2 stops. But you get way more shadow detail with TMZ at 1600 than you do Tri-X.

Tim, I didn't know that. I thought I saw a considerable increase in grain between 800 and 1600, so I was expecting this to be really noticable. Thanks for the info on the differences bewteen TMZ and pushing Tri-X.

Ahh, well I'm not an expert by any means, just what I've seen. I use XTOL 1:1. To the first order, grain size is based on what is in the actual emulsion, and faster films have larger grain. So pushing the film might affect the size of the grain a bit, but a fast film with big grain is going to have big grain.

Though films are not solely composed of one size of grain.

I've not really studied to see if TMZ at 800, 1600, and 3200 have increasing grain. I do know that, for me at least, all of my TMZ is always grainier than my Tri-X at 400-1600.
