hi,
just ordered the 8100 instead the Epson V600 because it's said to be slightly better, fon the same price, but i was wondering if it scans *also* the frame around the negative. This isn't the most important thing, but i love when it's visible in my scans!
I'm going to use Vuescan, probably!
ciao!

Nope, the frame around the negatives is not being scanned.

Pretty good scanner. Only drawback so far is speed and the fact that it doesnt have hardware scratch and dust remover, but if you like to tweak individual photo and you are not on a hurry to scan a bunch of negative (like me), you will be pleased.
Here is an example scan:
M6, Ilford Delta100, Summilux 50mm, 5.6

I use Vuescan with my 8100, do multi-scanning to output DNG files and do all my "processing" in Adobe Camera raw. Works very well.
Scanning at the maximum advertised resolution to me seems not worth it. The extra detail resolved over around the 3600 setting does not appear worth the extra scan time in my opinion.
The negative carriers obscure/cover the areas outside the image area of the negative, so scanning the actual negatives outside the image area is not possible using the provided carriers.

For scanning colour negatives: If you got a carrier that allows you to scan the sprocket holes, you need to remember that it will mess up the color balance, since the size of the "real darkness" area (like the outer rim of a frame) would affect how the auto de-orange mask work. You can of course set the Film Base Colour manually in VueScan to avoid this, but it can be fiddling.
When using auto de-orange mask, turn on VueScan's Auto Level and you are good to go, and it saves lots of time. Occasionally, when you have almost "real white" coloured object in frame, right click on it to get almost real white balance. I don't even do post-process on the images followed by this procedure unless I want "special effect" (like ultra-visual-impact! thingy) or want to make skin tone better.

I think that there is no HW scratch and dust remover existing for BW film by any producer. For example Nikon Digital ICE also doesn't work for BW film.
