I never did find out what Tom thought of Caffenol. I'm sure someone has asked, and I'm sure he has given it a try. He may have offered his thoughts here on RFF (I'll so a quick search). I have been pleasantly surprised with Caffenol....
The Defender paper developer is a secret weapon for exhibition prints. Despite very high concentrations of everything, the print sits in it for what seems like a long time and hardly anything happens . . . then . . . BANG!!! . . . the image is there, almost to completion almost instantly. Incredible deep blacks. Only for the brave. Tom is much missed.
