I looked at your series because you mentioned in your post that you used a good bit of Neopan 400. I'm a contrast junkie and love the deep blacks and the tonality of many of your shots. I was curious as to your favorite developer for this film and what post processing takes place, if any. I've been mostly Xtol, or Xtol with a low concentration of Rodinal, but my film to finished file still doesn't have the punch/impact that I see in this series.

My "recipe" for the Neopan 400 Presto/Legacy Pro is very simple. HC 110, diluted to 1:60 and 12.5 min. That gives a dense looking negative - but with plenty of detail in the deep black areas and in most cases decent high lights.
My scanning is quite simple - I do "trim" the edges and give it a slight boost in contrast. I still process for the "wet" darkroom and for "on screen" stuff you need to punch it up (about 10-12%). Some spotting if needed and for stuff like the Japan series - also mild straightening of horizon's - unless I feel particularly "Winograd" channeled.
This trip (7 active days) only netted about 28 rolls and I did about 15 in HC 110, some in Rodinal 1:50/11,5 min (a bit fried) and some in classic D23. The latter gives a bit "softer" look - almost vintage looking negs. Plenty of details - but moderate contrast. I will tag this series with camera/lens/film/developer/ over the next couple of days - so for more info check the tags.

This was probably my 15th visit to Japan. It is one of my favorite destinations, these days mainly because of friends there - but it is also one of the great 'shooting" destinations. They also have an appreciation for photography and there are plenty of galleries dedicated to it.
It is surprisingly easy to get around - you get lost often - but that's OK as you see things you normally never would discover.
I recommend that you just go - dont overplan - just let the trip take over!

Look from the bright side - it is cheap and quick to go to Tokyo from Vancouver - about 8-9 hours and about the same cost as going to Europe.

Regarding the film in the cameras - I'm slowly trying to switch to film also (with mostly objections from my wife - she likes the digital because you can see the photos instantly)

Vincent, Thanks for the kind words. I like shooting in Japan - it is different from Vancouver. Tokyo is like being stuck in a gigantic pin-ball machine - people, signage, traffic - all mingle and somehow get along.
Your home town is also an interesting place - though I haven't been there since 1971!!!
One of these days we will do the Tokyo/Singapore leg too.

Hi Tom, I wasn't born in 1971 yet! That's a long time back since you visited Singapore. The country has definitely changed by a lot. Hope to see you here in Singapore soon! I would love to see my country through your lenses! I have not travelled to Japan yet. Initially planned to do so last Dec but changed plans due to the arrival of my bundle of joy. Hope to be able to travel again in near future.
