too bad the fuji 60 is so slow!

been looking at and thinking of getting the new fuji 80 macro...seems like a perfect and very flexible lens.
it can do 1:1 macro...portraits...general shooting and even a landscape or two. and it is touted as fuji's sharpest lens to date.

despite all that i really wish fuji would have juiced the 60 sorta macro up a bit...it's a great lens...good fov, nice small size and sharp as all get out.
but that af is really slow, especially when it hunts for the proper af.
i recently got a very nice sample of the 60 and have been using it quite a bit...no great art produced but that's on me not the lens. yeah, perhaps a new af motor or 2?, juice up the math...small, sharp and quick...a could be perfect lens.

I have 50mm and 90mm macro lenses for my film cameras, which I also use on my XT2. I prefer manual to AF macro lenses because the plane of focus is so important. I would not want to let AF decide for me, or have to work around it. I also don't see the attraction of a 120mm equivalent macro lens. I think a MKII version of the 60mm macro lens would have be a better bet, but Fuji doesn't seem keen to issue upgraded versions of existing lenses.

I hated using it on xe1 and Xpro1 but on the xt1 it was great.
Focused quickly in good light. Always hits. Hard to complain.
On early bodies yeah.... it’s unusable.

no, it's not THAT bad...and it's pretty good in good light...outdoors, inside...not so much. on the newer bodies for sure better than the older bodies.

i don't manually focus anything these days...i need af to get it right for me.
i also would prefer a new mk11 version as i think i might like 60 fov more than 120.

I think the xf60 is in a strange place in their lineup and fuji's incentive to upgrade is, is very low.
The xf60 was just to flesh out their early lens lineup with a do it all short tele, it is neither a true macro lens, nor a portrait lens. It is a compromise lens.
For a short compact tele we have the xf50 f2, for a portrait lens the xf56 f1.2 and the xf 80 macro is for everyone else.

Other than the low used price, i don't really see the appeal of it, what is it you like so much about it?

Anything longer than 50mm equivalent doesn't see a lot of use from me. Unless it's really long...I mean in the neighborhood of 400mm equivalent and up. But I agree the Fuji 60mm is a superb lens when it comes to sharpness and how it renders images. I mainly have mine for close ups and it excels here. I don't do portraits and I wonder if it's not too sharp for the portraitist anyway. For general use, I don't use a 90mm equivalent focal length.

The AF can be frustrating. It's slow and sometimes nonexistent. Mine sometimes balks even in good light when the subject is low in contrast or backlit. Manual focus, with that focus-with-wire design, kinda sucks. I've only used it in manual mode for really close subjects and it's hit-or-miss a lot of the time. That's my fault, not the lens. Like Joe, I need AF these days anyway.

But where the 60mm really shines is in how it renders the subject.

there is lots to like about the 60...size, handling, sharpness...as a walk around lens it works well on the street...a few years back (with my first copy) i shot some winter city snow shots and then moved in closer for some bicycle covered snow shots and they were sharp as a tack and had the ability to center in on details...not macro but nice and close none the less.

I agree. When shooting macro, I find that AF is almost guaranteed to focus on anything except the intended subject!

The 60 mm renders so nicely. ... wish I could shoot it with some hp5 😀
Long before the f2/50mm was released, I wished Fuji would re-barrel the 60mm with a standard focus helicoid.
This lens as a "pancake" would be excellent.
Alas, fuji gave us the 2/50mm and that pretty much fills the place of that re-barrel 60mm.
Still.... the 60mm is a gem in the lineup. Kept me from wanting the 56 while Fuji was my primary digital set.
