Top Cover of R2 made of plastic?

Hi I have an R2 bought used so its olive colour is chipped on some places and I noticed that the floor plate is metallic grey under the paint, whereas the top cover has the typical plasticky milky white. Could it be that this part was still made out of plastic as it would have been too expensive to change machinery?

Hi, I'm a R2 olive user, the top cover and the floor plate cover are made of magnesium, the magnesium is very similar to the aluminium only that is stronger and with the contact with the air became a little darker. The last production of the R (that use to be made with plastic) was produced in metal olive, grey and navy and don't fit in the R2. If you have a pic of your camera will be easy to understand with more detail.
