Top Five "Evil" SLRs of All Time

Okay, The Canon FD thread got me thinking about about the really good SLRs of my callow youth (and somewhat beyond). This is, of course, unscientific (how could it not be?), but now that I've started, I guess I've got to finish it...

Edit: I've expanded the list to six, as I forgot Leica's SL/SL2. Mind you, this is not an "all-inclusive" list, and I've left off even a few SLRs I've actually owned (Pentax LX, Minolta Maxxum 9xi) for various reasons, though it does not mean I thought these cameras were somehow "unworthy." Can't please everyone, and all that.

you could have added pretty much all the popular choices, and we would have seen the progression of the poll to show who likes what. I think that would be better...

although i voted Nikon F, Canon F1, Olympus OM.... and that is all i will put. 🙂

I know, but I said this wouldn't be all-inclusive, and I'll admit I was heavily weighted toward pro-oriented SLRs from the late-60s to late-90s.

Denise: I know, I know...at the last minute I thought about all the Spotmatics, particularly the F and ES II. But I was also thinking of SLRs that largely made it into the mid-late 80s at least, and Pentax had at least one major sea-change in that period (thread-mount to K-bayonet) before anyone else did. Yes, it's aribtrary, but I hope you'll understand. (I left off one of my fave SLRs, the Minolta Maxxum 9xi.)

Tough one. For name recognition, it would have to be the Nikon F series. I used them for many years, and most pros I know used them. But the Leica SL's, even though lagging in innovation for the time (to be kind), have such nice finders and great lenses. Still, I'd have to give the nod to the Pro Nikon's for the top 35mm SLR of all time.

As much as I would love the option to support Pentax on this one, the RTS II is a hard number to follow. Contax it is!

I kinda-sorta implied the F6's inclusion by my "you get the idea" remark. 😉

I left out Pentax, Zeiss-Ikon (all those wild and wonderful SLRs from the late-50s through the swan-song early-70s), and Topcon (who actually did make a serious pitch to pros in the late 60s/early 70s). This was a rather tough call, and, as mentioned before, I left off a fave or two of mine in the process. (And, hey, this is my first poll!)

Voted on the basis the Nikon F range includes the FM in all its guises, including the lovely FE (my favourite all-purpose and holiday film camera of the moment, refurbished Leica IIIC notwithstanding).
