Top shutter speed of FSU RFs

Looking at Wolves' thread on selecting a FSU cam (and not wishing to hijack his thread), I think that the top speed of 1/1000 on some Zorkis and on the Kievs is quite a desirable feature. But, I had read somewhere long ago that this top speed is not likely to be accurate. I also read where the top speed of 1/1250 of some Kievs was revised to 1/1000 and that the reality was that it would be nearer to 1/750. Has anyone checked that these speeds are near to what they claim? My normal cams are the Zorkis 5 & 6 and some FEDs, all limited to 1/500, but I think that a spell with my Z4 and Kiev may be calling.

Russ P...beck got his Kiev to 1/1000 on his speed tester. I'll give you we are not all Russ...

I don't know about Kievs, but in my experience with Zorki-4s
the inaccuracy of 1/1000 is quite true. Even with the
most thorough CLA - and regardless of shutter tension and
lubricants - you're likely to see at least a 1/2 stop difference
in slit width, start to finish, which I believe is ok for print film.

I will get round to running a few frames on the same scene and trying say 1000, 500 & 250 with appropriate apertures. The consistency of the negs should indicate if the speeds are about right, at least compared to each other. I should be able to see a half stop difference in exposure.
Noel, do you mean that Russ adjusted the speed to 1/1000?

Thanks Bob. This is indeed and area where otherwise small changes in the slit width will become much more important. This reminds me that the Kiev's curtain move in a way which is much more synchronised, I believe that the curtains stay in their relative positions more reliably.
 
Thanks for that Noel, now I remember reading this a while ago. Russ has done a lot of work here. What Bob has raised is quite interesting and is something that a tester like this will not detect, a change across the gate. Maybe two phototransistors, one at each side......woa! too technical?

If you feed into the stereo jack plug input of a 'sound blaster card' then two is possible.

If you take a shot of a TV raster image then an M shutter looks speculative... the blinds are not constant width and accelerate like drag racers. The pre ball bearing Fed/Zorkis slowwwww.

Never noticed any problem when they dont cap or bounce even with chrome film, the idiot with the meter is my big problem

I know exactly what you mean, me too! Help me out here, I'm trying to put the blame on the gear.......
I've just been out for an hour between, or should I say, just in time to cop for, the heavy downfalls. At the local park for a bit of air and an outing for my underused Kiev and J12. Mmm, just love that soft and quiet shutter! took pics of the blackest cloud passing over Manchester City, until it reached me! Had to scramble for cover...(after the kit is stowed of course!). I hope to have my "comparison" shots in the bag.
