Canada Toronto Area RFF Meeting: November

I many ways my photography has been going backwards equipmentwise. I've been getting simpler cameras (mechanical) and collecting old single-coated Nikkors to use on my SLRs.

Peter
Peter, I wonder if we're related? Substitute SC Zuikos for SC Nikkors and we have the same trajectory :D

Gene, there's a quality to those old lenses that just isn't present in today's optics. For colour, I find the multi-coating adds a warmness that just isn't right. And for B&W, the old glass can't be beat.
They may not be as sharp or contrasty as modern lenses but those aren't the only qualities that make a good lense.

Peter

Bump as a reminder :)

This coming Saturday for those that are interested !!

Cheers
Dave

Sorry guys, I have other commitments on Nov 12.

If makes it, be sure to check out Dan Igger's Contax II and the two 50mm Sonnar lenses I overhauled :) Its a family heirloom which makes it extra special to him.

The collapsible 50/2 (unfortunately cleaning marks) came with it but I also sold him a user condition prewar 50/1.5, which you must feel the weight of to believe. It has some balsom failure in the rear triplet along the edges which made it a good deal for Dan, but I've never been able to see an effect in the photos I took with it. The last owner who decided to give it back to me dropped it and dented the filter ring, but that heavy duty prewar barrel is very tough to knock back in completely.

Never mind single coating, try no coating!

I sold a 1937 Ikoflex II TLR with an uncoated Tessar 75/3.5 to a talented Toronto area photographer. The colour shots she emailed me were just wonderful. Uncoated lenses have a glow and increased shadow detail that I just love. I shot the attached with the same camera in a fleeting moment with my daughter.

Beautiful shot. Gotta love that old glass. All it takes is a few test shots with the uncoated and SC lenses to learn their qualities and a whole world of photographic fun awaits.

We're one day closer to this Saturday's get-together. The current weather forecast for Saturday is a mix of sun and cloud. Rain is not forecast, but it's predicted to be windy, so tighten down those RFF hats.

Is there anyone who will volunteer to be a cell-phone contact person for anyone who gets lost or arrives late? I don't own one, or I'd do it.

I'll be bringing three new GAS items, all acquired via RFF: Leica IIIf RD + Canon 50/1.8 lens + Russian turret finder. I could also bring along my now-redundant Zorki 3M (recently overhauled by Oleg) that I plan to sell, if anyone would like to look at it.

That's an idea. Should we bring along one or two goodies for sale? I'm sure there'll be an ATM handy (and no shipping charges) :D

I'm pretty sure we said Nov 12th, 1pm at Balzac's -- the coffee house -- for a meeting place and a cuppa. Then a photo shoot in the district, working our way towards the Esplanade for a round of beverages.

Jan, I'm sorry we won't be meeting you on the 12th.

Please pass along an invite to any budding (or otherwise) RF shooters you know in the area, such as Toronto members of APUG or pnet classic cameras.

Here's a map to Balzac's: http://canada411.yellowpages.ca/sea...d=0&pst=simpleSearch&srchtype=business&city=t

Ooooo! How much?

Peter, I'm thinking $80 Cdn ... the overhaul alone, not factoring in the shipping charges, was $40 US. The shutter curtains were replaced so it should be good for another 30+ yrs.

No M2 Gene? :D

It will be there! It's my main shooter now :D

Gene, I'd be an idiot not to look at that price. Please bring it along ... that sounds like a deal I'll have a very hard time refusing.

And I'll amend this to read I'll take it if the rangefinder gets along with my Jupiter 8.

Peter, you have first refusal. I've used two different Jupiter 8's on it with good results.

Now I've got to finish up that roll of film I have in the Zorki!

Gene

Gene,

You can use my cell phone (as long as it's charged) for contact info if need be

Dave

gene, i can't believe you're selling that zorki!
i thought for sure IT was the one camera that you would hold onto!!

when did you get the leica lllf? i missed that one completely.

and i guess your turning to the dark side is also now complete! ;)

The Zorki has been a great friend and I do love it. But a IIIf is kinda like the 'Ultimate Zorki' (sorry Leicaphiles ...)

The IIIf looks and feels great, and was advertised here on RFF. I purchased it from The Kook, and he shipped it *really* fast, well packaged and insured.

Luke has turned to the Dark Side of the Force ...

wow, blink around here and things change!

good luck with the iiif!

btw, i see you're really into that 50 collapsible, some nice stuff posted in the gallery.

joe

I can't tell you guys how pumped I am for this! I know we haven't set a schedule other than when we meet up, but I have an evening committment so can't stay late. I am picking up my son (Kensington Market area) and we are going to the Bruce Cockburn concert in Brampton, which starts at 8PM. So I'll need to leave in time to get there on time.

Trius, "If I had a rocket launcher..."

i love bruce coburn but he is the MOST boring live performer i have ever seen.
and i've seen hime 3 times, i think :)

joe

Joe: Hmmm. I've seen him twice before: 1977 (!), and ~1986. I've never found him boring. In '77 (at Alumni Hall, UWO, London), he was very "fresh" maybe because of his youth, the times, etc. In '86 it was at Massey Hall, and he was fresh into an acoustic tour, so it was a change from having a big group. And the acoustics in Massey Hall are mesmerizing. Reagan was president, so Rocket Launcher was a propos and he electrified the crowd.

I haven't followed him much lately (he gets NO airtime here in the excited states), so it will be interesting to see what this performance is like.

Trius

No question Rocket Launcher was a great one but he still put out a ton of other material that preceded that one. Coldest Night of the Year?
