M9 & 35/1.4 is all you'll ever need. Consider 21-35-50. Welcome aboard -

have you tried a rangefinder yet? Make sure you do.. there's a chance you might not even like it.

Try before you buy.

Seriously. do a test drive. If you are made of money, get everything new. If not, then buy used and then if you don't like a lens, you sell it for the same price you paid for it. Also, don't rule out non-leica lenses. The Zeiss Sonnar 50 1.5 can be had for a fraction of a new 50 f/2 summicron, and has an amazing rendering capacity.

SLRs are usually used with very long telephoto lenses, at least some of the time. Are you aware of the fact that 90mm is about as long a lens as can be reliably focused on a rangefinder? (Sometimes 135mm, but very few people use a lens that long on a RF, while that is almost wide angle to many SLR users.)

I think the money for the lens is not a "waste" because ı can sell them in future..
and the body M9 also will be in the area at least 3-4 years
the matter is focusing system.. is it too diffucult to get use for a ex dsrl user?
I know the rangefinder system.. and limitings about tele and macro.. but also ı feel the diferent soul.

Leica Lens Choices + M9 Concerns?
Leica Lens Choices + M9 Concerns?
I am a Canon DSLR user and I am also thinking about a Leica M9 as an 'everyday' camera - I have used a rangefinder before.
My Leica lens choices are the -
* 28mm f2.8 Elmarit ASPH
* 50mm f1.4 Summilux ASPH
* 90mm f2 Apo-Summicron ASPH + 1.4x Magnifier
Although I think Zeiss manufacture great ZM lenses, I have to keep reminding myself that it is the Leica Lenses that I want to use and experience.
The Leica lenses are the main reason for moving to Leica but I may be going for a 'film' MP body as I am concerned about the Erwin Puts review regarding 'moire' relative to the M9. It is early days regarding reviews so I will be holding back until the spring of 2010 to see what transpires with more feedback from users.

There are also those who find them easier to focus, so I think you can safely ignore that one.
Even so, why buy three lenses at once? Buy the one you think will be the most use -- for me it would be the 35/1.4 -- and go from there. Not quite wide enough? Buy a 28 or a 24. A bit too wide? Buy a 50. Just right? Well, for a second lens, do you normally want to get more in, or to pick out details? Or both? I'd go for 21/1.4 or Tri-Elmar 16-21 at the wide end, 75/2 at the other.
It's intensely personal, though. My wife's favourites are 18-50-90.
And as others have said, I'd try an M-series first, just to make sure I liked it.
Cheers,
R.

I just started using leica rangefinders from 5DII
and focusing is REALLY HARD
there are no depth of field in the viewfinder just 2 rectangles which makes it really hard specially with 1.4 or 1.2 lenses
I've shot 4 rolls so far and none of my f/1.2 pictures are in perfect focus
anyway it's still a lot of fun

Then maybe 35 1.4 plus 75 f:2 first maybe best to start..

Hey, let's assume that the OP is an adult, has the disposable income, can make his own decisions and wants recommendations about what is best. So he's talking about $20K in gear. So what? I grant you all that there is sense in what you are saying, but cut the guy some slack.
24/1.4 Asph
50/1.5 Asph
90/2 Apo Asph
OR
21/1.4 Asph
35/1.4 Asph
75/2 Apo Asph
We are talking about some VERY expensive kit here. But if I had just won the lottery, that is what I'd put in my carry-everywhere bag.
If I had to just get one of the above I'd go with either the 35/1.4 Asph or the 50/1.4 Asph depending on whether my vision was wider or less wide. The 35 is probably the most versatile. Apologies for an mangled Asph/Apos -- I can't keep 'em straight.

Maybe I should try first ..before buying... but at least I know there is very good people here
Merkin
For the Weekend
Things you will lose when you switch to the M9-
The ability to reliably do macro
The ability to use zoom lenses (other than the tri-elmar)
The ability to use depth of field preview
The ability to use autofocus
The ability to use shutter priority and program AE
The ability to use any focal length you choose without external viewfinders*
The ability to sync a flash at 1/250th
The things you would gain:
Smaller size
Reduced weight
The ability to use Leica lenses **
6 more megapixels
Some fuzzy, ill-defined sense of "passion," "nostalgia," or "romance" that is often a misguided belief that "photographer x used leicas, and made great pictures, so if I use the same type of camera as photographer x, I can make great pictures too!"
* The M9, if I am not mistaken, has built in framelines for 28, 35, 50, 75, 90, and 135mm lenses. If you want to go wider, you will need an external viewfinder that goes in the hot shoe. If you want to go longer, you will need a device called a visoflex, which basically turns the M9 in to an SLR. IMHO, that would be silly.
** You can use Leica lenses on Nikon SLRs by buying Leica R mount SLR lenses and converting them to F mount.
As to the cost:
Leica M9 body: $7000
Leica 21mm or 24mm f/1.4 Summilux: $6000
Leica 35mm f/1.4 Summilux: $4000
Leica 90mm f2 Summicron: $3500
Total cost: $20,500
You are looking at paying full price for the M9 and the 21/24, there just isn't really a used market for them yet, as they are all relatively new products.
Don't get me wrong, rangefinder cameras are a lot of fun, and Leica lenses are among the best on the planet. For me, at least, it isn't 20 thousand dollars worth of fun though.

If I were dreaming it would be the 21/1.4; 35/1.4; 50/1.4 and nothing longer.
