Tough stuff!...these Billinghams.

+1

Good for you for keeping your wits and your gear.

Be thankful he wasn't on a motorbike. I've seen unsuspecting tourists dragged down the street with the strap around their neck.

Where I live its legal to shoot someone who is in the act of robbing you like that. There's a liquor store in the inner city of Fort Wayne whose employees all carry guns. There's a sign on the door that has a picture of a gun and the warning that the employees have killed several robbers and will not hesitate to shoot anyone else who tries to rob the place. The employee uniform is a t-shirt with a gun on it and the same warning! I can think of at least 20 men who have been shot and killed there by the store's employees over the last 10 yrs. Its all over the TV news and in the newspapers when this happens, yet people STILL try to rob the place!

And there are still people who enter this shop where they risk their live when they make a false move? That's crazy man.

You gotta love the UK and the way it protects criminals. Defending property with force will get arrested for assault, which is a more serious offense than a charge of theft or burglary. The thief will be out of jail before you are.

The result is that you can steal with near impunity, with no threat of violence from those you steal from, and no worries of serious punishment by the authorities.

I guess it's no surprise that the rate of violent crime in the UK now surpasses that of the US.

Not quite right: murder rates in the US apparently exceed those of the UK by 3:1.

There is an amusing (if that is the right word in this circumstance) political battle with crime figures at the moment, because of the way they are now recorded. In the UK, someone swearing at you can be recorded as a violent crime if the victim decides it is.

In any case, well done Dave.

Nice one Dave! As a former student of Hull Uni, I would like to offer this small poem in commemoration of your bravery:

They **** you up, those billinghams.
They may not mean to, but they do.
They're made to house our rangefinders
And save them from the likes of you.

Now you are ****ed up in your turn
You fool on bike with hooded coat,
When you grab bags so sternly made
You're twatted by a Yorkshire bloke.

It's almost a year since my heart attack, and a few things that I used to do without thought, now need consideration!, but in situations like this - habits and attitudes of a lifetime seem to kick-in automatically. In the bag was just a Nikkormat FT2 and a couple of lenses, not exactly big cash value, but it's been with me, and much traveled since 1975 - and having a special place in my affections, it will take some prizing from my hands!.
Dave.

here where i live out in the country, there would have been a caravan of pickup trucks stopping to help take care of the tyke. there is thievery, thanks to methheads, but it is of the furtive kind, late at night. too much risk to life and limb otherwise ...

well, i googled billingham bags to see why the punk found yours so interesting. i must not let my wife see those bags (she is a handbag freak). then again, maybe i should. nice kit there ...

Dave,

Good to hear you are ok and there was not a happy ending for the lad. This just begs for a t-shirt.....

Best regards,

Bob

Here is the content of my bag - unashamedly pictured on a RF forum, because they don't often get a mention, and I love mine!, don't really know why, it's big, heavy, and not very ergonomically shaped - but for quality of build...and results...IMO...superb!
Dave.

Sorry, Chris, I've been to Indiana and I've been to Yorkshire. I'd rather be in Yorkshire.

Who said I wanted to be in Indiana? I'm here for my son, came back from Santa Fe because my son's mother's mental illnesses were getting worse. She ended up in the state mental hospital and I got custody of him. As soon as he graduate from high school in 5 yrs, we're outta here and going back to New Mexico.

Yeah, I was a bit snarky, Chris. Apologies. Life takes us places.

I grew up next door in western Ohio. I left more than 30 years ago. I go back once or twice a year to visit the relatives who are still there. No way would I live there. Things keep going from bad to worse.
