I am thinking getting a scanner but i know my wife's not gonna be too happy if i get a 'huge' flatbed scanner to place on our already small study table....

Has anyone tried the tower type kinda dedicated film scanner that's typically sold for under $100 brand new? How's the scanning quality? I am not too concern about the included programs though. I have photoshop in my pc.

Most likely junk. Basically inside is a 5mp CCD chip that takes a photo of the film. That said you dont get a true 5mp worth of film info, more like 3mp.

I have not tried one of the tower jobs though.
That is just from reading reviews.

For 35mm film you would be better off buying a used film scanner.
I saw a Canon FS4000 the other day for $250 and it delivers some nice images from what I understand.

Also saw a Used medium format microtek 120 TF scanner for $650.
Better than most any flatbed under $5000.

Then there is the plustek etc etc.

After that maybe an Epson V600, but dont expect real 4000 dpi film scan quality out of it.

I use a Minolta Dual Scan IV. It's smaller than a tower or flatbed scanner, and I am happy with the quality of scans it produces. However, you're limited to 35mm and APS (with an optional adapter). I paid about $225 for mine on eBay.

Don't waste your money. I bought a coolscan 4000ED for $300 a few months ago online (guy turned out to be local so i saved some money on shipping too). Look for a deal. You'll pay a little more on ebay but they are well worth it

The older Coolscan and equivalent will be pretty expensive to ship to me in Singapore due to the weight so i dun think i will want that...

What about Canoscan Lide 700f? Is it any good?

Plustek? Good?
