Trade M10+M10M for M11m? Talk me out of it.

I have an M10 and an M10M. I really enjoy using the M10M and I am happy with the output and prints it can produce. I very rarely shoot colour (maybe less than 5% of the time and I have several other cameras that can do that). I don't think I have used the M10 for at least a year now and it is just gathering dust.

I am thinking of trading both cameras for the M11M. I don't need the extra megapixels, but the M11M has some nice features like the USBC, internal storage, better battery life, multiple resolutions, digital zoom etc.

Alternatively I could trade the M10 for some lenses or just sell it and keep the money. My only concern with the M10M is that it is getting a bit longer in the tooth. An M11M would be a little more future proof.

Thoughts anyone?

Um, who cares how old an M10 Monochrom is? It will continue to make the same photographs until it literally stops working, and if those photographs satisfy what you want, there's little reason to change. What does it mean to be future proof? As long as you can power it, it'll continue working.

The M10-M was released in 2020 ... barely six years ago ... This is "old" now? Sheesh: most of the digital cameras on my shelf that I continue to work with are twice as old as that, at least. Most of my film cameras are 20, 30, up to 80 years old... The M10-M continues to work splendidly.

I have the M10-M and M10-R. I expect to keep shooting with them for another decade or more, unless they stop working and are not repairable... 😉

Do you mean that the M10M is getting "long in the tooth" as a platform, or just yours (due to lots of use)? I own an M10M, and I don't see myself outgrowing it in a long time, if ever. Some of the features you mention are conveniences, not necessities. Perhaps the only major concern for the M10M's future is availability of batteries should you ever need more.

Regarding quality of the images from the M10M, I regularly visit the l-camera website's Monochrom pages. I am often wowed by what the previous Monochroms can produce. In particular, I find images from the Monochrom 246 (one generation before M10M) to have beautiful tonal gradation (perhaps it's the experience of the photographers). That's why I don't see myself needing to upgrade anytime soon.

In your shoes, if I really was not using the color M, I'd sell it. But I wouldn't necessarily go out and buy new lenses or another body.

Thanks for both your replies.

I think I should have prefaced my post with the fact that this will probably be my last M camera purchase. So an M11M will have a better survival chance while I can keep shooting. I admit that the M10M should also last for a good few years yet. I didn't mean to imply otherwise.

I'm in my 60s now BTW.

My first M11M was very unreliable and it took a giant amount of work for Leica to give me a new one and to not return it saying it was ‘in spec’ and that the problems I described ‘couldn’t be replicated’. The first major firmware upgrade improved this for a lot of people, but not me. If you want to monetize cameras you don’t use, go for it, but consider investing the cash until Leica comes out with something more mature, and, hopefully, something that doesn’t close-open-close a mechanical shutter to shoot.

I am keeping my M10M cameras, largely because I have ended up with $AU6k worth of batteries for them . . .

Your words, not mine. The rest of your comments, it seems to me, are you simply trying to talk yourself into the M11M.

Rent the M11 for a week. make sure it works for you before you buy.

Tying these together: because of the distinctive M11 shutter action, if the M10 is your "comfortable old shoe", you might find yourself unhappy with the "feel" of an M11. Or maybe not. But best not to commit to getting rid of your M10M until you know first-hand what it's like to use the M11.

So, regarding the long in the tooth thing, I have an M-E 240 from 2019 that's working just fine. No interest in "upgrading" to an M10, let alone an M11. The M240 batteries have excellent life... I can shoot all day on one charge; yeah, it's a bit heavy and fat, compared to the later models, but it still makes good pics and the M240 series has been very reliable. I suspect your M10 cameras will likewise continue to roll along.

Hmm. I'm in my 70s. While I don't imagine I'll be buying all that many more high-end cameras (mostly because I already have more than what I will likely want/need), I don't rule it out on the basis of my age. I think, presuming battery availability, that I'll be using the M10-M/-R for another ten years or so anyway... Optimistic? Perhaps... 😉

I tried the M11 in a shop and hated the shutter sound, compared to the M10 and M240 I thought it sounded like junk and Jono Slack told me that he said exactly that to Leica. It also feels like the shutters laggy although I think the sound is fooling you.
You really need one in your hand to see if works for you.
I'm seriously considering the M10m as my final Leica...

Keep M10M, it's really good. I bought it used recently. .. The potential is hidden in the details, p/p brings it out of raw files with practice.
Would not trade for M11 if me by now.

I also had M10 few yrs ago and sold it, didn't like it so much; (lack of the correct M lenses, not camera's fault).
I do like M10M now the little time have had it, it's impressive as ease of using auto iso no matter which # and can set fast shutter w/no worries.

Am finding 50/2 Lanthar and 28/2 Ultron (latest ver) work great; did not have those when had M10. Even 35mm Summicron v3 is great at f/5.6 & f/8..didn't care for it on M10 & lower resolution. (Wish I still had the 35/2.5 color Skopar to try but sold it.)

The M11 shutter _is_ slow as well as _sounding_ slow. The sound makes it seem worse than it is, but the shutter lag is way longer than the M10M if you use the rangefinder (not the live view), which is slower than most pro grade mirrorless cameras. @mrtoml appears to mostly shoot landscapes, so maybe speed of operation is not a priority, but it is for me.

I must admit I have exactly the same combination as the OP and whilst I salivated a bit when the M11 came out the initial problems (and price) put me off. By the time everything was stable I had cooled down. My only inclination now is to “do a Godfrey 😊” and change the M10 for an M10R so as to have two similar feature sets.
