Traditional Night Fishing

In 2009 I started a photography project: Traditional Night Fishing.

I began the project using a Zeiss Ikon ZM loaded with Tri-X pushed at ISO800 and ISO1600 and Kodak P3200. But I couldn't work in it too much. No time. :-(

In 2010 I tried again but with a DSLR (Olympus E-3). But I couldn't work in it too much. No time again. :-(

So I stopped the project and I thought maybe one day I will be able to start it again... and some days ago, I opened the project. I had one night to go with Fishermen, so I took my X-Pro 1 + 16mm+ 23mm+35mm 1.4 and Hoped everything would go fine.

I was really excited and I tried to enjoy the experience... but after one hour and half I was seasick, really "sick". It was the first time I felt in this way. It was horrible. But I had one night and I was there... so, I tried to shot as better as I could.

I don't know if I will be able to return to the ship, once again, but maybe...

I really like the subject material and the images but I have to be honestly critical ... please don't take offense.

On my monitor they look really over sharpened and the micro contrast is too extreme for me.

Very very cool photographs! Really brings home the life on board a fishing vessel. I tend to agree with Keith, a bit too much contrast for me as well, but still lovely shots.

Keith I didn't want to develop them in a standard BW. I was thinking on a "Metallic" BW... I wanted to feel the steal in the photographs... but maybe I haven't take the good point and it is too extreme...

Do you think the same about Color developed photographs?

I particularly liked the "action" shots; they are very powerful images and well composed. Like others, I think the processing might be a bit to gritty, even though I understand why you wanted to complement the subject of the images with some harsh/steel-infused rendering.

Great project...once you get your sea legs, you should get back to it!

Love the pictures! Have you tried a long shutter speed with flash to get some motion blur? This might capture the dramatic action more.

I've only been sea sick once in my life (on a little whale watching boat racing back to shore for one hour through heavy seas) and was shocked how seriously sick I felt!

I enjoyed the photos. I am not a digital person so I can't judge the amount of sharpening on a poor monitor, but if Keith says it, I believe it.

That doesn't take away from the subject matter, the compositions, and the use of both b/w and color. Thanks for sharing.

giganova, I haven't tried a long shutter speed + flash... I want to use only "ambiental" light, no flash and capture the moment...

oftheherd, as you said, I think Keith were right (thank you again!) and I have tried to develop them in a more natural way. Here you have the new photographs:

The original processing has an advertising feel, which I like but perhaps too much for a whole portfolio of photos. The more natural treatment works well. The colour shots are show the beautiful light of your location - very nice. Thanks for sharing.

What a great project, Shab! Glad you persevered through the missed connections, and sea sickness. I like both versions of the photos, but that's because I have a small background in graphics, and contrasty photos work good for some applications.

I particularly like the first and last photos from your 2nd "developed" set here. I feel that they best tell a story and give a sense of what fishing is like on those boats. Fantastic work! I'm glad you decided to give it another go after all of this time.

I'm still working on this project. Now, I'm trying to capture the work of the women and men working with the "net". This is another chapter, very different from the sea images, but it is also a part of the project.

Shah, continuing the great with the new set. I would try as Ko.fe said to convert some to BW for consistency with the first set. Still good work though, really interesting project.
