At least 45 people were killed today when a subway train derailed in Spain's eastern city of Valencia, according to the regional government.

Initial reports from investigators suggested that the cause was a damaged wheel, an official with the Valencia City Hall said. The train also appeared to be traveling at an excessive speed, the official added.

The derailment occurred around 1 p.m. on subway line No. 1, as the train was traveling from the station at Plaza de España toward a station called Jesús near the center of the city, government officials said.

Valencia, a city of about 800,000 inhabitants on Spain's Mediterranean coast, is swelling with visitors from across Spain in preparation for the arrival of Pope Benedict XVI, who on Saturday and Sunday is making his first visit to Spain since becoming pope.
