About 8 years ago I was doing my bachelor thesis in the field outside a small city in Northeast China, and I saw the K19 train passing on a rail way not far away - the train wagons were arranged one in green, the next in brown, taking turns, with "Beijing/Moscow" printed on the brown coloured wagons. It was a beautiful scene at dusk. Solemn, nostalgic and serene.
The K19 takes an alternative route from the one you took: Beijing - Harbin(my hometown) first, then the train goes out of China from north of Heilongjiang province (part of so called "Manchuria") to Russia, not touching Mongolia.
Maybe one day I will take K20 home

When we bought our plane tickets, we did not look to see when the k3 ran. I have no idea why we did not look. It almost looked like we would have to start in Harbin for the train you're talking about or fly to Vladivostok, as our trip was short, we couldn't risk having to wait in Beijing very long. Luckily, it all worked out and we had a great time. Next time, I think I will do London to Vladivostok.

Excellent images, thank you for posting.
One question: were there any restrictions concerning taking photos in railway stations ? I read about photography not being allowed in some parts of the Russian railway. Is it so ?

I had no issues anywhere save one, a lady got mad, but I think it was more about her not wanting her photo taken, not that it was a rule.
It is this photo, you can see my friend to the right trying to take a photo and getting yelled at. I think he had also taken his photo already.

It was a bear, for sure. I wanted to continue to London but we'd have to pass through Belarus, and the visa there was even worse.

I've written two more updates to this blog post series, Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, and Irkutsk, Russia. I'll add some photos here in a little bit. Now, I have to finish Moscow and St. Petersburg, then I can write about the next trip.

Thanks so much for this thread and the link to your site. I needed something to read today
I mean... this trip and MF film, what's not to like?
Friends of mine did London to Vladivostok years ago as a couple and they loved it, so jealous. Come to think of it, I think he shot a lot of it on MF too.
Talk about living life!
