Maybe not up there with finding a Nikon M in the trash, but a couple of days ago I came upon a perfectly good digital compact left in the "take it or leave it" section of the local dump of the town in Maine where I'm spending a week. It was apparently in a box of books and other items that had just been dropped off -- I waited impatiently while the guy who works at the dump went through it. I guess he's not into photography....

It's a Sony DSC-S700, a modestly specified camera from 2007 or so -- 35-105mm/2.8-4.8 equivalent zoom, 7.2 MP, no viewfinder. It was a little bit scuffed up, with a small ding on a corner, but cleaned up well. It had a memory card in it, and fired right up when I put two AA batteries in it. Based on the 130+ pictures on the card (which I proceeded to delete), the owner had been a young woman who didn't use it for much more than some casual pictures. I suppose the right thing to do would have been to try and track her down and give her the card, but good luck finding her -- she is probably nowhere around here.

So I'm having fun playing with it -- got some pictures of the almost full moon last night that seem OK.
