Trashed my best Zorki.

I'd worked on my Zorki 6, had the curtains out, lubed and cleaned re-assembled. Works (worked) beautifully, even ran a test film through it to test for light leaks, all shutter speeds etc. I was very pleased, here was a "modern" camera, great vf and coincident image, smooth wind and nice shutter operation.
But... the shutter release was just a little too firm and jerky. No problem, just needs a little grease in the right places, easy! When taking the threaded retaining ring off the wind lever I may have given it a twitch in the undoing direction of a right handed thread, which didn't make the LH threaded ring any looser. Never mind, just give it a bit more clockwise........oops! what was that noise? Well, don't try this at home, as they say. Seems to have trashed the gear set and definitely the cog ratchet. Can't get it off now! it turns as in the convincing disguise of a coffee grinder. Guess this one can sit on the shelf with the mystery FED3a until I get brave again. Anyone got a spares Z5 or Z6?

My sympathies.

Had my moments too when working on Kiev and Moskva. Once I lost a tiny screw on the carpet, it took eternity to find it.. and with slightly less luck my Moskva-2 would be non-RF-coupled now.

I have a complete Z6 in spares. Died while trying to repair. I don't know how complete it is now. All parts are in a small box, together with FED2 parts.
So it is a little hard now to distinguish them...

I have got a 200mm Pentax K fit lens in a box, tried to fix the aperture.

Berci, I gave up after the FED. It was a recent one but it was hungry for film, munch munch. Tearing the sprocket holes!
Moved on to FED1 and Leica IIf.

Hey Rob,
you are more advanced than me, yours are in bits! Can't get the lid off this. I may have to drill the top casing to get in to lock the shaft. I've just received a couple of curtain sets from a Ukraine seller. Was going to do my FED2, before my mis-hap. Maybe I just need a quick win, just to boost confidence. Not quite the time to peek inside my Kiev4a for lube/clean then? 😉 .

Ouch fidget! 🙁 I was just considering an effort to smooth out the winder on a recent Zorki.5 acqusition. Now you've got me a little nervick_k_k ... maaaaaybe I'll shoot a few rolls through it first.

Do you have a link to online instructions for dismembering said Zorki.5 or 6?

If you have the later Zorki 5 with round RF window, the nuts turn CCW to remove [just like a Z6]. I've uploaded CLA tips here on the lever wind which is also linked to the disassembly instructions posted by fidget.

How do you like the Z5 so far?

My Zorki 4-K also just died. The advance lever won't cock the shutter anymore. This the second time and I am not going to send it for further repair. Done with Zorki! My Fed 3B is more reliable as all my Kiev 4's.

How do you like the Z5 so far? Joseph

Oops, sorry to ignore your question, Joseph. Actually, the first roll goes to process today, so maybe I'll have some test shots tonight. Already I have really enjoyed the bright RF patch... WOW! Makes focusing a breeze. The wider RF base may make it a good match for my 90.Elmar, though I shot the test roll with a Jupiter.12. The body being approx. the same size as a Zorki.1 (and a little taller) is nice in the hands too. The shutter release is a little "east" of where other Zorkis have theirs, but not hard to get used to. Right now I have a mini-softie on it, so it's easy to find. 😉 I bought this for my wife to play with, but... I don't know... maybe the Zorki.5 would be better off in the hands of an experienced FSU hoarder... uhh, I mean... user. "Hey honey, have you ever noticed (blow the dust off) this nice Canon.AE1?" 😛

No problem, I had an inkling you missed it...anyway good to hear the Elmar 90/4 is focusing properly with the Z5. Sometimes it won't couple on some FSU bodies because of the thinner focusing cam ring [compared to FSU lenses] since it can miss the cam sensor if there's too much gap. QC issues we've learned to live shooting with FSU stuff 🙂 !

Uh oh, haven't even tried it yet... just thinking out loud. I'll have to check that. Thanks! No biggie if it doesn't go. I love the Elmar and it works fine on the Zorki.1s and Leica.III. 😎
