Traveling light to Tel-Aviv

Ok - another trip and another quandary re: what equipment to bring

rather than start other one of those threads - I'm already packed, here's what's going:

Fuji X100T - nice and small, great output, simple to use, 35mm equiv.

Olympus OM-4T 85/2.0 and 50/1.4


what's not going:

1. Nikon D750 - I love this camera, too big though with my usual equipment for what I like to do - Tripod stays home. 14-24/2.8 & 50mm/1.5 ZF.2 Planar manual focus - seriously bokeh-licious w the Planar - just too much stuff

2. OM-D E-M1 and lenses - great camera, but big kit with 12-40 and 75/1.8 etc

3.various other film cameras - overlap with my OM-4T, no reason why one or the other, but certainly don't need both on this trip

Thoughts -

the digitals with cables, chargers , fat autofocus lenses - they take up a lot of space

The OM film kit I have was such a tight travel kit - 2 bodies 3-4 lenses, Domke F-803 satchel - so handy, not taking the full kit this time, so satchel stays


X100T - great camera and size, problem is the fixed lens - which makes me want to bring other bodies and lenses - I might look into X-Pro 2 in the future


anyway - let me know if anyone out there has suggestions for must photograph sites in the Tel-Aviv area


Ran out last minute to get a bigger knapsack - my Osprey 22 is great for limiting my carry-on - this time going a little heavier so got an Osprey 32, I've had the 22 for years, great pack, has many battle scars.

clothing etc - I also brought a little of that - but not important 🙂

Travel light. I'd use the X100T. I have a X100S and it is my go to travel camera. Here's my logic. You want to be able to get your shots and still enjoy your trip without being a pack animal. The Fuji's take great jpegs, weight almost nothing and don't make you standout in a crowd. I trust mine to churn out exposures and I don't need a backup.

And the X100's have the golden ND filter for bright middle eastern scenes!

I'm watching one guy taking pictures with one film RF and one lens at this location. Works without problems.
Get digi-fuji and get close.
I don't think yours dilemma is related to this location. Don't be grearhead, one main camera, one spare, just in case. What is it OM-D, or what, great for spare.

So far I've shot 2 rolls Tri-X
The Olympus viewfinder so big and bright, reminds me why I just love this camera
The 85mm for portraits on the beach one evening, the 50mm for walking around

Got some nice urban decay in the Neve Tzedek neighborhood and some open air market shots in Shuk HaCarmel

Surprising that a number of people say no photos - as if I'm going to hurt you by taking a picture of you olive bins in the market

Mostly no issues though

Using the Fuji for indoor family shots primarily

It was years back fro me but I was in Cairo and then Israel. I had a Leica X1 that I mainly used in Israel and never missed having more gear of focal lengths to deal with. I also carried an LX5 that trip. I second carrying an X100 whether plain, S or T 🙂

For those who missed it, I'm on the road with the X100T and Olympus OM-4T (50/1.4 and 85/2.0)

It was a good choice - I'm getting use out of both and not carrying things I don't use much - even though I'm an unabashed gear hog

I am reminded of the efficiency of a small kit and one lens mount - might even try that next time

No wide-angle lens? I would at least bring a 35mm, and maybe a 28 or 25mm.

it's been a while, since i spent 3 months in TA – it was a great place to stay and to photograph!

...in the end I just grabed one camera when i left the house. It's a cool place to do street photography and there is also a lot of interesting architecture – a place that combines both is the Charles Bronfman Auditorium and it's surrounding area. I also recommend the Central Bus Station but I wouldn't stick your camera right in peoples faces...

p.s. almost forgot: shoot film! when I lived in TA, there where still 4 or 5 labs and also some cool used (film-)camera stores.
