OK; I´ll confess: I´m giving up film (I think). I just came back from tihis great trip to California and Baja California (Mexico). I brought most of it - D200 and My new Zeiss Ikon M lilited edition (mostly means a pouch comes with it). My D200 pics are mediocre at best (with battery grip and 85/1,4 it IS a great, bor rather LARGISH set up!). I took 5 or 6 films with the ZI and the CV 5,6/12 and the ZI 2,0/50. Judging by the thumbnails; quite a few great shots - at least showing I was THERE, knowing what I was doing. But have scanned them? have I had time to even think of scanning them. No - sad, but true. Sorry; I need the speed of digital. I´m getting an M8. Does that make me something baddish? Tratorish? Anyway; if anyone´s looking for a chrome ZI, it´ll be in the classifieds in a day or two (I think).
Why do I feel bad abot this? It´s only cameras - technology ...:bang:

The alternative is to have the negatives developed and scanned to CD. Several RFF'rs do this.

no prints, just scan and CD does the trick.🙄
Only the few real good shots :bang: will warrant a high resolution scan....

Yes, that is what I do, too. However, I've found that the quality of the scans varies greatly. My local photo shop scans them to a compressed ~400K size. MPIX (www.mpix.com) scans them to about ~1.4MB. Does that make the MPIX scans better? I don't know, but all else equal, I'd rather have the larger file.

If you scan them yourself to 16-bit TIFs at 3200 dpi (just as an example) your files will be about 87MB each.

For b&w I have noticed scans from labs here in Albuquerque do vary with one lab being just terrible. I've got very good resulting scans from a place just north of Santa Fe NM called San Miguel Labs. Thier CD's are not expensive.

I have tried this - but the quality I get ... all automaic, a 17 year old operator who does not care ... and then; file size. I actually like to have lots of information to work with.

If you need scans I'd look around for a place that will do what you want as you want it. I live a good way from any city, so I have to send out all my color films, and have ever since I left NY 17 years ago. Shop around, call some labs, ask for the manager and tell him/her what you're looking for and what's been wrong with other places. They may even give you a break on some test scans, depending on how much film you'll be running. I just had to find a now lab to run my C-41/E-6 as my regular one has closed, and was surprised at how accomodating the places I contacted were.

My R-D1 totally took over, and I love it.

I have a fed-2 on order just to scratch the film itch when needed.

OK, I´ll live with that - I´m top of the list at my dealer for an M8 - and I´ve ordered a Ricoh GR digital - for wide angle, you know ...:angel: But maybe, just MAYBE I´ll keep just ONE film body ... 😀

I shot nothing but digital for a few years. Then I remembered b&w film just looks better, and, since I mostly shoot b&w, I mostly shoot film again. Sure, it's time consuming digitising it, but the results are clearly better, even scanned. Keep a film camera, you'll need it.

You already have a D200, just get yourself a slide set up with a roll attachment and commit to black and white films and you never have to deal with another photo lab for the rest of your life. Develop the film in any dark place at home or even hotel bathrooms and then load it up and shoot digital negatives leaving you with film negatives, high quality digital negatives and a way to make a final print in analog "Old School" or Digital Print "New School" and get on with your life.

Many RFforumites overlooked the writings on this subject last week. For me it was a instant problem solver for road trips into remote areas and location photography where dragging around a scanner was not a option for many reasons. As it happens a DSLR is already part of my gear so adapting it for use as a scanner makes it all the more valuable in the field.​
