Do give it a shot, but you might want to shoot non-critical material with that roll, just in case the highlights get overdeveloped. That said, with more dilution it's less likely that you'll run into overdeveloping that fast.
I'm just checked the MDC offhand and it has timings for EI 640 only at 1:9. Perhaps you can take that as a starting time. I'm pretty sure you are aware of the general rule of thumb to add 20-30% time per stop more than the given time.
As my additional practice, I generally agitate less when pushing. When I push Tri-X in HC-110, I halve the number of times I agitate. This is to rein in the contrast a little.
I like the TMX 1+9 versions too. The tonality is much more to my taste, smoother too. I´ve only ever done TMAX 1+4, and the results are more reminiscent of the D76 shots of yours, more contrast for one thing.
