Wondering if anyone has any leads to processing b&w film in Mainz. I'm talking commercially, not stopping by someone's house...although I'd probably enjoy that.

Well, maybe a local knows some relic I'm not aware of, but all pro labs I knew in Mainz and Wiesbaden have closed or gone over to digital prints only, and that is pretty symptomatic for cities of that size. Even in Frankfurt (some 30km away, the urban centre of the region) we only have two or three E6/C41 pro labs left. While none of these list black and white film development as a regular service, they might perhaps oblige with black and white if your order is big enough and everything is arranged in advance - if you want to try, mail me and I'll give you their addresses.

Easiest might be Studio 13 in Stuttgart - the only pro grade mail order lab doing black and white that I'm aware of in Germany.

David,
speaking "relics",
Charlie Engel in Mainz is offering B&W and C41 development (and prints), although I have not personally used him, I have read favorable comments about his work.

Nearby Wiesbaden: there is still a shop that offers in-house b&w development (Prisma/Foto Lehmann), but from personal experience I would advise against using it.

As Sevo metioned, the next bigger city would be Frankfurt, where Fotolabor Kratz in Sachsenhausen comes to my mind. Angelika Anthes, the owner, is specialized on b&w developement and traditional printing (all color work is sourced out). No personal experience with her work, but as a B&W specialist she might be the best option you have.

PM me if you need any assistance in dealing with the mentioned labs.

John

Thanks guys.

I'll be flying into Frankfurt, but staying in Mainz...but only for part of two days. Doesn't sound like this will work out for me. I guess I don't have to drag seven rolls of film with me.

Thank you again for the info.

I know her as a excellent master printer - did not even know that she offers development. You'd certainly have to negotiate to have anything developed in a tight time scale, as she's certainly in demand - when there is a rush (e.g. ahead of art fairs and trade shows) it may sometimes take weeks to have anything printed by her.

As Charlie Engel is local, it might perhaps be worth while contacting him. If that does not work out, it would be rather pointless bothering with any of the Frankfurt or mail order options for a mere seven rolls within a fixed two days limit - you'd waste most of your time on trips to the lab or on waiting for express couriers with no guarantee that you get the films in time for your flight...
