Tricked out Canon S90

MRock Bag (with room for extra battery and card), Grip and 37mm filter adapter from Lensmate, a Raynox .5X Superwide adapter (which offers about a ~15mm angle of view instead of the 28mm the regular lens offers with surprisingly little distortion or fall off, considering) and Leica Red Dot (just for fun.)

This may be the most fun I've had with a camera in a very long time.

I LOVE the grip. I actually purchased it directly from Richard before I got the LensMate adapter. It makes shooting much easier.

I removed all of the velcro because it catches and snags the woven wrist strap of the camera and I cut off the 'rain fly' and label for a lower profile.

1/300 f/4 ISO160 widest angle, macro focused, Raynox .5X AUX lens attached with LensMate adapter.

Interesting to note that I also shot some of these in RAW and in Bibble Pro 5, the uncorrected images show the AUX adapter at the edges of the image and WAY more distortion.

It certainly isn't a 14-24/2.8 Nikkor by any means, but for fun stuff that I want to shoot, I am very happy with it in the same way that some folks like to play with Holgas, Dianas and Lensbabies I suppose. (and the whole package weighs and cost a LOT less that a 14-24/2.8!)

I think we sometimes concentrate too much on technical excellence and not enough on the fun aspect of photography. If a low cost lens does the job there is no need to spend big money on a 14/24 f2.8 lens.

Well thanks, but as I mentioned, this lens does have characteristics that would keep me from using it for anything I was getting paid to produce. It IS a bit soft in the corners and in high contrast light it does suffer from pretty heavy Cyan and Red fringing in the corners. Not nearly as badly as other 'aux' lenses I've used, but the 14-24/2.8 Nikkor and even my beloved Sigma 10-20/4-5.6 produce far superior results (of course with much larger sensors too.)

This solution is fine for the fun stuff I want to shoot day to day though. I got it because I really tend to prefer wider than 28mm equiv. If the S90 had matched the LX3's 24mm/2.0 equiv. I likely wouldn't have purchased this AUX lens. Glad I did though. 🙂

Point well made. The reason I bought the Aux. lens is that after seeing the quality of your photos I decided that much as I enjoy my 10-20 wide angle lens I dont want to have to take a SLR and heavy lenses with me everywhere when I just want to take things like holiday photos. It just fits in with my ambition of making the S90 into a very flexible, small and light take anywhere camera of reasonable quality.
Not trying to say that it replaces my other gear, just that it creates other opportunities to take photos. Plus the bonus of keeping the wife happy because she does'nt have to be seen with "The Camera Guy".

I added a 37mm polarizer to the kit today. Was cloudy bright out today so I hope to try it out in the brighter sun this weekend.

One point on the Raynox Aux 'lenses'...mine is a .5X Super Wide lens and they make a .3X (Semi-Fisheye) and a .7X Wide as well. I have to put my camera in macro focus mode to use the .5X and tried a .7X and a .3X today in the shop. I found that the .7X works just as well as the .5X, but the .3X sits too close to the lens to focus using the LensMate adapter on my S90 even with the camera set to macro. It works if you hold it out in front of the lens a bit more in macro mode and I think it would work if I put a UV on the LensMate first and attached the .3X to that. Just fair warning.

Tip: I have set the C mode of my camera to replicate A mode, LF JPEGS (I like the in camera processing for the super wide shots) and macro focus mode preset. This saves me a lot of time in changing from regular wide angle to the Aux lens. I just switch from P or A mode (where I'm usually shooting) to C mode and it is ready to shoot with the Aux lens attached.

I've also recently purchased the control dial solution from Lensmate Online as well. It looks like Canon have solved this issue with the S95 by taking all our suggestions into play and making the dial click stopped, but for us S90 users this was a decent solution. I don't tend to make a lot of use TURNING of that dial anyhow, but when I do I have to now make a very conscious effort to do so...on the other hand, I never bump it out of setting now either.
