Trieste and Venice, Italy

We went to Trieste for a few days, it was great. We also had a day trip to Venice (little bit too busy for us!)

We plan on going back and exploring surrounding SLovenia and Croatia.

My wife and I visited Piran, Slovenia earlier in the year and we didn't have enough time to visit Trieste even though it was only a stones throw away. It looks like a beautiful city!

Thanks, I'll be looking for Slovenia travel tips soon so thanks for the tip

The images are beautiful. I especially like your B&W ones

We have been three times so far to Northern Italy, but not to Trieste.
 
beautiful! all well-taken and nicely processed. agree with raid, the B&W conversion is especially nice.

venice impresses, but i prefer trieste and croatia, particularly istra with its coastline and small towns and villages

Hi raid it was my trusty R-D1 and new(ish) 35mm Nokton 1.4 - normally I use a 28mm Ultron so I was nervous about switching but this lens seems good enough and it's a fair bit lighter/smaller. The FOV matches the 28mm framelines in the R-D1 perfectly, funnily enough...

Processing wise I use Lightroom for basic straightening and dust spotting, then I generally have a 'go to' B+W setting and I'm still adapting my colour one.

I really like Trieste, much preferred to Venice (which is just all about tourists IMO). I find it not quite Italian, not quite Slovenian, not quite Austrian, but a nice melting pot of a lot of cultures, similar to Melbourne in some ways. I go there semi-regularly to attend experiments at Elettra Synchrotron up in Basovizza and go to the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) near Miramare (on the other side to the photo you show). If you get a chance next time you're there, the landscape up around Basovizza is really nice.

Here's one from my last trip (looking the other way to your Trieste at Night shot.

Agreed - I've only been to a few places in Italy but Trieste did feel quite different. I can't wait to explore further.

One thing we couldn't work out were the best times to go out for dinner. We arrived in a Saturday eve and obviously some places were closed on Sunday but also on Monday, and in the evenings some places were just opening at 8pm and others closing!!

We did find some great places to eat including some amazing pizza.
 
Venice you just point your camera in any direction, and the city is beautiful, particularly without people at night.

The trick in Venice is to not go to the tourist areas, much of it you see almost none, especially on Giudecca or Lido. Even Dorsoduro is empty at night. Easy to sit outside and have a spritz in peace.

Agree. In Slovenia they eat a lot earlier than in Italy in general (7-8pm vs 9-10pm). Trieste is a bit of a mix, and being so close to Slovenia many places eat a lot earlier. We usually just stumble until we either happen upon an open restaurant or drink our fill (of Sptritz Aprol this time) with the complementary snacks to the point that it no longer matters...

I had the same thoughts about Venice. I stayed in Verona which we loved. I've also seen a lot around the Abruzzo region which wasn't very touristy at all!

Thanks for the extra pics folks, it's really cool to go somewhere then see how other people 'saw' it. Same thing happened on my Sicily thread I made earlier this year.

Really like your shots crosseyed-cricket; I wish I had something wider for Venice but I didn't want to take more than one camera.
