"Everything is so close together" is not a phrase that comes to my mind about coastal Maine... The deeply indented coastline makes for some long drives.
Not to spoil the mood but "Vacationland" is a carefully maintained image. The reality includes far too many stories like this one: http://bangordailynews.com/2012/03/...b-fire-that-destroyed-mobile-home/?ref=latest

We are spoiled in New England when compared to Texas. I agree with you, the drives around the "bays" do get long to us, but compared to the larger states out west...... Hey, just driving through Virginia seems like forever compared to a drive for me to say the White Mountains, which I can do in just a little over 5 hours comfortably with stops.

Yes -- this is beautiful country, but make no mistake, there is a lot of poverty (and all that entails) as well.

Trust me, the longest drive along the coastline of Maine would still feels like it's shorter than a straight drive from Dallas to El Paso... in the Texas summer.

Sure, but that's people making choices for themselves, and it happens where ever we find ... well, people.

+1
Only lived in the Dallas area for a couple of years, certainly it has it own beauty, but long flat straight drives can get mighty boring.
. . . . . exception may be in the spring when the Bluebells and Indian Paint Brush are blooming for miles on end while driving down the highway, a beautiful site!

You're very welcome, Dan.
The effort becomes worthwhile when there are people to share the results with.
