Taking a day/night trip to San Francisco taking my M6 and 50mm summicron and first time going to SF and shooting with film any recommendations on film to use? ISO, Brand, color, black and white? Sorry for the noob questions after shooting digital for so many years I am lost in the world of film photography

If you don't mind the grain, ISO 400 is safer in San Francisco- gray days, building shadows, etc.

Color or B&W is something only you can answer.

If you have some time before you travel, run a test roll at home. If not, just get some film and go for it. A day and night isn't a long-term commitment so don't worry. You'll stumble into the right combo for your work eventually.

I came back from San Francisco a few days ago ..... and I shot ISO 400 color negative film and had (and still have) the impression that it was a good choice.

Possible films: Kodak Portra 400, Fuji Superia 400, Fuji Pro 400H

Portra 400 and Tri-X.

The Portra 400 can be pushed to 800 with little added grain (and to 1600 with a bit of grain).

Tri-X...well, it's a classic.

If you don't want to shell out for Portra, just get some Superia 400. It doesn't have quite the shadow speed of Portra, but it's certainly a lot cheaper and produces nice, reliable results.

I live in SF and there are a few things to consider. As stated above morning overcast is common in the summer so 400 works very nicely. That said it gets very bright in the afternoon so you might like to have some 100 with you as well.

I shoot mostly TMAX 400 and Acros 100 in SF. The colors of Chinatown might be nicely captured using the new Portra 400.

Have fun! If you get some free time let the folks in the Bat Area group forum area know and we'll be happy to meet up and show you around!

The weather in the Bay Area has been a bit of a weird this summer. Last week, when I was visiting San Francisco w/ my wife, there was overcast until about 2pm and then cleared up nicely. Had a nice walk across golden gate.

Where I am in contra costa county, a bit cooler summer than normal..

Other summers, any overcast usually burned off before noon.

I would say bring mainly iso 400 w/ u..

If you're going to be scanning your negatives and not printing in a wet darkroom, I'd say get a mix of Portra 400 and Kodak BW400CN. Both can be processed at the same lab and the BW400CN can use your scanner's clean-up features. Tri-X will have to be "spotted" in Photoshop.

Now, if you're going to do darkroom prints, go for the Tri-X or XP2, which scans and wet prints beautifully.

Acros 100 during the day. Tri-X for the evening/night. Depending on your style you might bring a travel tripod and cable release if you really plan on being out after dark. SF is photogenic even at night. Color is also a good option.
