Does anyone know of a good source for a shallow 3/8 to 1/4-20 tripod adapter that will work with my FED-2 (type D-6, ser. 3546375). I have several adapters, but all are too tall to fit in the tripod socket for the FED.

I bought a generic one from eBay a while back, and can't say I had any problem with it. both my Fed 2s will take it quite easily. How tall's the one you've got in mm? I'll measure mine; if it's smaller I'll go find the seller I bought it from for you.

Mine is 8mm long overall.

I saw that Yuri sells them. I suppose I could drop him a line to confirm that it will work.

Alternatively, I suppose I could try grinding it down and dressing the threads.

At that price, after paying postage, ebay and PayPal, he/she won't have much left. Talk about giving them away.

Many tripod heads -- not all -- have a reversible screw in the head. Try unscrewing the actual tripod screw itself. You may find that it's 1/4 inch at one end and 3/8 inch at the other, with a 3/8 thread into the tripod head itself.

Cheers,

I use a Manfrotto #352 ball head.
It has the 3/8 thread spring loaded, concentric with the 1/4 thread. Great for multiple camera systems.

Excellent suggestion. Unfortunately neither of my tripod heads are configured this way (Arca-Swiss style and simple platform) :(

Mine's 5mm, so you might have a bit more luck with that. It's ebay item 180642823790.

Thanks! This may very well fit the bill!

Yikes! I just noticed that shipping is free. I should buy two!
