Hello:

Best of luck in your search! The auction site has two linhof "new"($142.00) previous generation light tripods currently available. One is a Reporter, very light, small, stable and portable-I had one for decades.

How about the old Leitz table top if you already have a ball head?

I have a Bogen 3001BPro w/ 486 ballhead. A good tripod is essential in many situations.
I can second this recommendation. Relatively light-weight and convenient to use. Good for 35mm and MF SLR with "normal-ish" lens. Anything bigger than this may be pushing its capacity too much.

I have 3. A Linhof Giant which goes up to 12 feet or so, a Linhof Baby which goes to 4 feet, and a Culman which is rigid and tall enough for 99% of when I need one. I use ballheads, jsut some cheap ones.

well, i found a manfrotto 190 with manfrotto head, a smallish one (can't remember the model #) but he wanted 150 for it and i got stubborn.
but then i checked out the price for a new one (199. w/o head) and am having second thoughts.
i may go back next week.

- A good used one is far better than a new bad one. All camera stores I see have these all too light and cheap ones. From a ZI man to another; I can strongly reccommend Gitzo. If you can get a carbon fiber or the new basalt models 2.hand - or the older, of aluminium, just go for it. You find the Gitzo page here:

http://www.gitzo.com/jsp/index.jsp

Don't underestimate the weight capacity you need. Your ZI does not demand much of a tripod, but if you have a SLR with a hefty tele lense you have to look at something two to three times the weight of your equipment on the weight capacity chart of the tripod producers, because the off senter weight distribution.

In the picture bellow you see my Zeiss Ikon with the ZM 25 mm 2,8, a Gitzo G1340 and a G1276 ball head. This combination is just within the margin I need to keep my Canon 1Ds II and a 300 mm 2,8L steady. But only just. It works better with anything lighter. Like my Hasselblad and Zeiss Ikon gear.

Further; keep your camera mounted on a pod at home. Then it's ready for shooting in tripod 'configuration'. Actually the best way to shoot in available light. When you see a photo oportunity, just pick up the camera on the tripod and shoot away. You will be amazed to see the effect on your pictures. Even the ones taken on 1/60.

i had a gitzo, bought used, many years ago but sold after letting it sid idle for years. now, i'm a bit shakey and am thinking about using a tripod again and wishing i had kept the gitzo. it was one of the smaller models but very substantial.
now they are too expensive for me to buy new and finding a good used one locally will be difficult.
i may go back and get the manfrotto 190 next week.
