trolls...

But that is only when you don't have to rush them to the vet because they've ingested a bicycle wheel..

You can't leave that story hanging, surely?

My parents kept goats for about thirty years, I did an MSc project on them, probably explains why I ***** swear like an **** ******* ******* trooper... Love them to bits, but they are infuriating too!

So, if someone is expressing negative opinion about yours pictures it means he is a troll? I could understand this reaction.
But if someone is liking your pictures how trolling is this?
If it is honest?

Is seeking attention constantly for you and your pictures also trolling?

Joe has a good point here. He started a thread asking if there was a digital equivalent of APUG the other day and this was one of the responses ..... LINK

I personally dislike this sort of thing intensely ... a throw away comment that degrades other people's preferences and adds nothing to the thread.

... yes but he didn't get very far with it, there are too many right thinking people on here to let that sort of comment pass unchallenged

Sure .....But !

Don't you think this sort of comment is just a misfired effort to be funny?

Not all cheeky comments are trolls.
It's the interweb after all.
We all need to put on our teflon glasses before logging in.
On those occasional thin skin days.... I for one stay offline :)

Maybe it was ... and all it would have taken would have been one of these  or this :p to clarify the intent of the poster.

If that was the case!

Thanks to bringing attention to this post. I followed the link in the sig.
Stephen have his opinion and his pictures in tact.
Rough sometimes, but interesting and consistent.
with film.

i'll write more tonight...i forgot my ipad at home and find reading/writing on my phone too much of an unenjoyable chore.

....
is this not what every artist truly wants?....

No, it's not, at least not from them. You want feedback from those who reflect deeply and objectively on your work. Trolls don't do that. Plus, they are not actually attacking your work, but YOU and the recognition or perceived authority you have achieved. That's really what their small minds resent.

No, that's not trolling. That's (presumably) what you, I, and most everyone else would do, as one does.

Trolling can be picked out by its obsessive nature. Compare with this: if you give an unsolicited critique to someone, and that someone reacts badly, then the normal thing to do would be to shrug, perhaps also to mutter between your teeth "what a sensitive oaf", and leave. Not so with trolls. Trollish behaviour involves cyber-stalking and other malicious techniques designed to fly under the radar (e.g. poison-pen letters with various recipients, multiple online identities etc.). The troll is not particularly interested in criticism. Criticism is just a beard for other stuff. The primary aim is to bait an emotional response. Hard to believe there are blokes like that? Don't take my word. Stick around for a bit in a forum (any forum), see for yourself.

As to why, who and how, forget it. It's difficult to lump together all trolls. They come in different shapes and forms, as in every other walk of life. One thing they seem to have in common is dissociativeness (lack of empathy and remorse) a behaviour further exacerbated by the impersonal nature of the web. There are probably various (and by no means common) triggers to this behaviour but it seems to cut across genders (although trolling is more often than not a male thing), educational/social backgrounds, and intelligence levels. Severe cases certainly exhibit sociopathic traits.

Is seeking attention constantly for you and your pictures also trolling?

Again, not trolling. Just a variant of spaming. Annoying when you are at the receiving end of constant overtures to look at someone's latest and greatest, but orders of magnitude different from trolling.

trolls...
a fact of life on the internet...
... my images are having an emotional impact on them and pushing them to seek me out and make comment on my work.
is this not what every artist truly wants? to establish an emotional connection with their audience?
so really, having your own troll sort of establishes you as a real artist...no?

If only it were that easy, Joe. Yes, art polarizes, but not everything that polarizes is art. In other words, if a troll, or anyone really, attacks your photography, your photography doesn't suddenly turn to art. Like others above said the troll isn't really interested in providing a critique. Which, funnily, is what invalidates what they say.

Sadly, the world is burdened with too many people consumed by the knowledge of their own inadequacy, who are desperate to crush the spirit they envy in others. The people have an undeveloped core and a need to spite others to buoy up their own fragile, hollow self. Looking closer to home would be too painful.

Dedicated trolls are people with genuine issues. I prefer to consider my own work in light of the comments of those whom I have respect for i.e. decent human beings.

A big +1 to both.

Thanks!

To me clear indication of trolling is in "personal attack".
It is not good at all, but it is hard not to sometimes.

Don't feed (internet) trolls.

Joe, sorry you feel you are receiving this treatment. Appreciate you posting images; that takes courage; trolls have no courage.

if this citation is meant to be evidence of one of the more egregious examples of trolling you've come across, you may be a) incredibly thin skinned, b) hanging out on exceptionally over-moderated forums, or c) in need of a sarcasmometer calibration.

i've been quite frankly floored at how often people here cry bloody murder about (in the grand scheme of things) what they perceive as "vitriolic remarks," which appear to me to be quite benign. i don't know what kind of internet fairly-land some of the members here must frequent so as to elicit such an "OH MY GOD HOW CAN SOMEONE SAY SUCH MEAN THINGS" response to a comment of such low-severity, but it must be interesting there.

perhaps it's a case of developing callouses... also likely a generational difference as well.

... or d) a self opinionated anonymous avatar who makes little contribution and has a truculent attitude ... not Keith you understand, but we do get them on here sometimes

..........

Joe, I am going to skip out of the global discussion here, but this comment is a classic :D
I feel offended now that I don't have (or at least I don't recognize) my own personal troll :D

Joe, what you describe is a phenomenon of spending time on the internet...the more you share, divulge or participate in within the bounds of the internet, the more you expose your self to this kind of thing.

Also, photography is a hobby for you, for your enjoyment so why care what people think or say?

And in closing, if you ask for an opinion, insight or other type of feedback / information, don't expect everyone to reply in the same manner. In other words, if an opinion comes across more direct or sternly than others, perhaps allow a person to be who they are instead of what you want them to be, saying what you want to hear.

Otherwise....don't play in the sandbox.

Joe, why care about what others think about your images? Only you can be the true judge of your own work.. If you create an image that makes you (or someone you're emotionally tied to) happy, then that's all that counts.

By the way, the true great aren't the least bit interested in their audience, they're only obsessed with pursuing their creative vision..
Whew! Then I am great. Ha
