Trouble in the Hood?

I was in Manhattan for a gig (which was postponed by client enroute), and B&H was one of my scheduled stops, for both film and blank CD/DVD media (they've got some insane-low prices on Verbatim DataLifePlus printable CD-R media at he moment...). I also thought it was a good idea to check on a usable lens hood for the 1st-generation 35 f/2 Summicron attached to the M2 I have on extended loan from another client, since I generally don't use filters on lenses, and even a pricey Leitz hood is cheap insurance versus a dented filter ring, or worse.

Upstairs (they've seriously remodeled the place since I was last there, by the way...if your last visit there was a year ago, you'd get lost without a map there now), in the Used gear department, someone went in back and produced this hood, for less than I expected:

Now, when he first showed it to me, my first reservations was whether the damned thing would actually fit my Summi at all (please go easy on me, guys...I came in through the Hexar back-door, so to speak), and I recall some of the hoods that were supposed to be "correct" looking a good deal more "retro." But I have two weeks to bring it back, and my Manhattan client will likely be rescheduling our gig well before then. For under fifty bucks, I thought, why not take a chance?

I get home (much later than planned, apparently on account of someone landing on the subway tracks at a really bad time...), and try the lens out. Ye gads, it fits! But, is there going to be a light-falloff penalty, on account of it not being the "right" hood?

It's labeled for three 50mm lenses (f/2, f/2.8, f/3.5), and two 35mm lenses (f/2.8, f/3.5). I'm guessing this hood was produced sometime sometime between the 2nd- and 3rd-gen 35 f/2 Summis, but I'm clearly out of my depth here. Am I needlessly micromanaging here?

The summicron 35mm hood is not that one. There is a square format hood 12524 which is the very best in your case being more compact and optimized for the F2 aperture. There is also the summilux hood which would fit. Try shooting slides to see if the corner gets darkened.

My guess, it fits your lens quite well. What you bought is the 12585 hood for the 35 Summicrons / Summarons or 50 Summicron. The 35mm Summicron vs 3 hood is the 12504 (also for the 35mm Summilux pre-ASPH), that takes series VII filters. Since your lens has a E39 thread, series filter are not necessary.

The rectangular hoods (12524 or 12526) would fit your lens also (they are all A42 clamp-on size) but rotate since only the 35mm Summicron-M vs 4 and ASPH have the "nose" that prevents the rectangular hoods from rotating.

I've been looking at suitable hoods for a DR Summicron and 2.8 Summaron and it seems that the ITDOO and IROOA/12571J hoods are of the right period and have a more vintage look which would also suit the 1st generation 35 Summicron. But the rectangular hood for the 35 Summicron ASPH would be functionally the best.

Gabor: Yep, that's the hood I got (12585). Fits perfectly, has some obvious signs of use, but little abuse (one small ding) for a user, and $44, not too bad. I'll test of with a roll of 'chrome film, but have a good feeling about this hood working out. Thanks for the info!

12585 I use on my v1 35mm, also on the 50 cron col., and also on the elmar 90 f/4 col. No problems with any of them. $44 bucks is a steal.

I think 12585H added 2/35 to the engraved list. That's the one I have on v3 35/2, and no problem at all. I got it for $45 (some paint loss, but no distortion).

I've read several times on forums (forgot where) 12585 w/o "H" is essentially the same thing as "H" version, just not tested and "approved" by Leica so there should be no problem with Cron 35 in real use.

I've got a 12585 on my CV Ultron 35 - fits like it was made for it. In fact it's the only thing in my entire Leica kit made in Germany.

I have the 12571J on my 35 Summicron v.1 and a longer hood on my DR that is marked Summaron 3.5cm & Summicron 5cm, but no product code.

I believe I used that on my old 50mm f/2 back in the 90s. If I remember correctly, you can turn it around and put it on your lens backwards when storing it.

I didn't fit that hood correctly on my Summilux 35f1.4 and one corner did have a light fall off on about 3 of the total roll. I caught it later in roll and I think it cleared it up somewhat. I will have to shoot another roll to check it out again. I used the hood on a Summicron 35f2 with goggles and I noticed no light fall off.

That hood works fine on the v1 Summicron. Only caveat is that occasionally at f2 and closest focus you can see a faint "shadow" on the neg. It is miniscule and usually blends in with the "regular" fall off of the v1 at f2. The original hood was a more funnel shaped one - rather big and clumsy. I can never remember the Leica codes for these - and I am too lazy to sort through the Hood drawer to find it. Sorry!
What is intersteing with your hood on the v1 Summicron is that I have had 35f2's v1's that did vignet and others that did not! These were all very early 35f2's (16xx xxx) and I think that leica was still trying it out design wise in 1958.

Let me add one more vote for the 12585, possibly an H, hood. Mine looks like it did a few tours in Baghdad and cost a mere $40.

Barrett, you now have a hood ready for a period correct DR Summicron.

I believe this is the same hood I have on my 35 Summicron, and it works fine.

If it is, the front part unscrews and allows you to use thin 49mm filters with the hood...there might be a little vignetting then, but I have used thin Olympus filters (which I already had) without any difficulty. Plus they are a lot cheaper than 39mm ones!

I have both the ..585 and ..586. one lists the 35 f2 and the other doesn’t, as far as I can tell they are identical so if there was a change it was the later lenses that were different
