Trying to file a 35mm film carrier and ending up in the psych ward

What enlarger are you using? Some carriers are sold as "full frame" so filing may not be needed, e.g., 35mm carrier no. 8055 for the Beseler 23C.

I've tried filing and it was a very tedious and maddening experience.

I tried to do that years ago with the carrier in a Durst M300, without a proper machinist's vise to hold the carrier really steady. I had to buy a replacement carrier and I gave up on the black borders.

FWIW, it's lots easier now with my hybrid process. I add a slightly larger black Canvas behind the Document in Affinity Photo.

He wanted $120 and accepted your offer of $50? Apart from the fact (AFAIK) that an offer is binding, heck yes, get it for $50 and count it as money well spent. You’d spend more of your own time trying to match what Beseler has already provided for you.

The 8055 carrier has an opening of 25mmx37mm so you get the full frame of the film image but not really meant to give you the big black borders you might be looking for...
I have a Beseler 23c but I've left those carriers alone...I have been filing on a carrier for another enlarger but not looking for super big black borders just enough to show you're getting the full frame...
I use a lightbox to help estimate how much border I should get, when I feel its good I might print off it, if after I think I'd like more border I can file away...little steps will save you frustration & cash...

If you need one filed in the future, mark it out where you need metal removed, take it to a bike shop and give the mechanic $15. I've done this maybe a dozen times and for some reason, I have never had an issue with it. I'm meaning, I did the filing myself, as I've been a mechanic on and off since 1994, so it's just a few minutes filing, and sometimes an hour or so complaining about aluminum shavings stuck in the pores of my hands. No big deal. Somewhere out there is a bike mechanic just itching to file away a few millimeters of an aluminum plate for a couple six packs.

Well now I have a new full frame carrier and a non full frame carrier. My understanding is that with the full frame carrier, it is simple to adjust how much of the borders/sprockets you want in the print. So looks like no need to file the other one but if I had to, I’d try the bike shop idea! Thanks!

Please update your "understanding" once you get the new 8055 negative carrier...

Dude! How do you butter toast? I encourage everyone to follow the link in the OP, gave me a good chuckle!
Keep the carrier you worked on, it's hilarious! I hope you're not mad at me, I'm sure you're great at other stuff!

If you try this again, I think the main thing you need is to mark the outline on the aluminum before you start filing. The best way to do that is to use a sharp scratch awl against the edge of a good sturdy metal straight edge. A small carpenter's square is good for that. I like to clamp it all down at the edge of the bench with two C clamps, to make sure nothing slips while I'm marking. Don't give up! If you keep filing, you might end up with a good carrier for 645 format. :) Just be sure to stop filing when you reach your guide line, and you can't go wrong.

What happened here, does the psych ward try to erase all traces of the OP?
Seriously, if my rude comment was the reason for the deletion, I'm sorry. I thought you, bert26, were already seeing the humorous side to this due to the "psych ward" framing.

If the OP 's constant dialogue to prefer only numbers: 420 69 666 2012
No real dialogue
Perhaps this thread should just be deleted...

Seems more like He/She is playing with Us or a troll bent on certain numbers pertaining to
cannabis, a sexual position, the Beast /Devil and whatever else one wants to allude to ... though I think not photography

Just my 2 cents, :D

At his own request, bert26 has left the forum. This had consequences on his posts and threads.
