Tube amps, cats, vinyl, linux....

Classic camera users are a unique breed. We have a lot in common. It's been discussed elsewhere, but I thought I'd avoid taking other threads off topic.

flip, good idea for a separate thread. I don't use Linux, but I'm guilty of tubes, cats (dogs, too) and vinyl. also, film, but now, with this new thread, film is off-topic. your turn. bump.

Really, I'm not just interested in the items I posted in the header. I'm just curious what you all think are interests that align with this passion we share for cameras and photography. For my part, I also enjoy gardening, homebrewing, and basically paternal hobbies where I follow a process from start to finish. I revel in the little things - the smell of tube amps pushing out sound and jasmine in the garden in the evening, the delicate precision of a barnack or a cat's paw, and the DIY or brewing, developing, and controlling my computer with linux. That' just me. I just want to see what kind of people you all are.

Cats, yes.

I do still have a turntable, but all of my new music is cd. I still have gobs of old 45s. 🙂

I have a friend who builds tube guitar amps. Does that count? 🙂

I love cats, oriental and siamese in particular.
I love vinyl, old turntables like Thorens 124 and SPU's in particular
I love tube amps. Only single ended low wattage types in particular but I can use a single ended transistor type like the Hiraga Nemesis or the F5 from Nelson Pass.
I love full range open baffle speakers too.
I love my Leica M2's and the Summilux and Summicron IV 35mm
I love the process of developing my own film and have yet to set up my own darkroom.
Did I mention guitars and blues?...

I love tube amps. I built a small 5 watt all valve guitar amp a couple of years back.
I love vinyl too, but currently dont have anywhere to put a turntable.
I love cats too.
I didn't get on with Linux- i love my Mac.

I'll also throw classic sports cars in too (but sadly I don't have anywhere to keep one of those either!)

My story:
Tube amps - Eico hf-35s, hf-12, hf-14s, af-4, epiphone triumph, gibson ga-5 skylark
Speakers - Klipsch forte II, rb-61
Vinyl - about 6-700 in the attic in the states
cats (have had 4)
linux - 13 years ; mac 1 year
cameras - nicca, leica, canon, olympus pen
also have a thing for guitars and vintage harp microphones like astatics

No matter what the hobby, I have to break something down and put it together before I:m satisfied. Except the cats. But I do enjoy training them....

Enjoy dominoes and backgammon, too - preferably if made of Bakelite.

I grew up with a siamese cat, have never had one since leaving home but am definitely more of a cat-person than a dog-person.

I haven't owned a tube amp for a while but have owned tube guitar amps and keep lusting for one again.

I have quite a few vinyl records but no turntable at the moment. Another thing on my list (when I find some space to put one).

I've used Linux in the past but I've always had some hardware or software not supported on Linux that prevented a full change to it. I use a Mac these days though (and support UNIX systems for a living).

My greatest satisfaction in photography comes from making - albeit crudely - pinhole and adapted optics box cameras, using paper negatives, and the processing involved in the darkroom to arrive at a contact print. This satisfaction is entirely process-oriented, but is reinforced when an occasional image results that stands on its own, separate from the process of its creation.

I also enjoy vinyl, although I'm only a recent adherent; but I've gotten my ten-year-old Grandson interested, with the consequence that we make the occasional trek down to Charlie's Records, here in Albuquerque, where we search the bins for items of interest. I have a small collection that I enjoy listening to; i collect them to play, not to warehouse, and am not a snob, not caring if its a first release or not.

An interesting side note is that, as a consequence, he's gained a bit of appreciation and education in 60s and 70s music that he would otherwise not have.

As for cats, they don't mix well with electronics, at least that's my experience from when I was a consumer electronics technician and had to repair the occasional TV or VCR that was, shall we say, soiled by the cat's urine after it fell asleep atop the warm set. 😉
