i think that's what they are called...
one came with the fuji 14 (same one as used on the 18-55 zoom)...

i think they are fugly...
are they supposed to be 'better' than a simple round hood?

i need to find a replacement for it...

Me no like those things. I can't recall ever using one...they usually stayed wrapped up on the factory packaging in the original box. 🙂

A hood should be as deep as is either convenient or possible. A 'tulip' hood is basically a deep round hood with cutaways so it doesn't vignette the corners of the image. The alternatives are a very shallow circular hood (far less effective for either flare protection or mechanical protection) or a much bigger, deeper, more expensive, often viewfinder-blocking rectangular hood. On ultra-wides (such as my 18/4) a tulip is the only rational choice. Ugly? Yes. Even so, I'd rather have ugly-but-functional than cool-but-appealing-only-to-the-sort-of-people-who-say-'cool'. As for 'stupid', no, they definitely aren't.

Cheers,

R.

tulip hoods - more effective; as said before, associate with SLR gear. Some compacts came with tulip hoods, I think, Riccoh GR1?
round and square hoods - less effective; compact and RF realm (but some SLR lenses also had square hoods). Look cool and special and all that stuff...
