Take a look at this eBay listing:

Anybody care to speculate on how this camera became so terribly mangled? It’s almost as if Superman tried to twist it in half.

But, the seller claims that it's in "Very good condition",
(considering that he only ran over it once with his car.)
This is rather odd, coming from Japan, as most Japanese sellers are very conservative in their description.

I think the description refers to the seller advertising it for parts rather than a functional body. The condition, disregarding the effect of Salvador Dali, of parts indeed is apparently good if say you wanted the speed dial, the counter etc and internally parts may well be recoverable. You can't complain the starting price and no reserve either.
As to the history, I would love to know.

Sad looking specimen of camera, yet still it might have had a glorious past, as befits this legendary model of Nikon RF cameras.

To me, it looks like it was run over with a car while it had something underneath it.

Got stepped on with a heavy boot, or someone flew into a rage and smashed it against the corner of a table? Would take some effort to make it that mangled. And there's a bit of discordance of the pictures and rest of the description with the phrase "very good condition". Well the seller does say "it works properly..

I guess I'm being too harsh on the seller.
It is in ebay "mint" condition.
He really is conservative after all.

I deliberately didn't comment on the eBay listing, but man, what happened to that camera?

Well, other than being horribly misshapen, it is in rather nice condition!

^^^^^^^^ This previous remark about the conservative nature of Japanese posters on ebay , Hello , +++ excellent , just a bit of fungus on lens ! Their listings are ludicrous ! Well that's my rant for the day . Peter

I bid $6000 for it. It's the little known and very rare Salvador Dali model. I hope I don't get out bid.

I saw the same camera with a 50 1.4 attached was sold on the Japanese yahoo auction site a few weeks ago for about $100. The lens must have been ok still so he's selling the body now.

Standard RFF SOP: just run a roll through it before considering whether it needs a CLA.
I agree motor car injury. In convoy. Driver of car number one leaves on roof fiddling with car-keys. Driver of car number two drives over it concentrating on instructions for the route from driver of car number one. Each bitterly blames the other, possibly such that this is an estate sale.

I have experienced this twice - got moldy stuff from Japan that was explicitly described as fungus free. In my buying experience on ebay I have found that the region/nationality of the seller has nothing to do with the accuracy/honesty of what is being sold.^^^^^^^^ This previous remark about the conservative nature of Japanese posters on ebay , Hello , +++ excellent , just a bit of fungus on lens ! Sounds like my friend who backed over his little camera bag in the driveway; it contained his Canon AE-1. Unlike the S2 here the AE-1 is mostly plastic and the aftermath looked like just a pile of plastic chips and splinters (and glass).

Make a good prop or conversation piece since is does appear to be in decent shape otherwise..
Likely ran over while in a bag, possibly a tumble off the trunk lid and under the next car.

Reminds me of a iiic I saw that had been underwater for a spell, listed as filled with mold and fungus, but cosmetically in excellent condition.
Creative listings on the big auction site. Or "Alternate Facts" as some folks like to say.

Poor marketing. Place camera in sealed perspex cube, along with roll of exposed negative. Label exhibit "The Death Of Film Photography" and sign "Damien Hirst".

Thought about bidding on it just for kicks, but the seller doesn't ship to S. Korea
I've seen Japanese sellers exclude their closest neighbor before, but for what reason I don't know. Sometimes I think they're just being dicks
