No many posts on the RD1 forum, so here's another...

Before I bought my RD1 I looked at many images to see if this camera was for me. For those still deciding, here are a two portraits that may help.

Both taken with 40mm Nokton. The first in quite harsh direct light at 200 iso. The second inside a pub at 800 iso (and I think about f2). The 800 iso needs no noise reduction. In fact it is the last thing you would want to do.

The last pic is one taken on the same day at a cemetry. I am enjoying the RD1 colours.

Cheers,

John

Good portraits, John, though the first could have done with shallower depth of field. Do you not have an ISO setting slower than 200? The ISO 800 one is impressive: at that rating my Olympus E-300 gives objectionable noise.

I agree totally but unfortunately the RD1's lowest iso is 200. Maybe some ND filters?

Good stuff John. Glad to see you're enjoying the RD1.

Gid,

I normally throw my huge lowepro backpack with DSLR, sony F717 (for IR) and lens in the car each morning - just in case. Now I just want to take my RD1. Life is good :)

Now I just need 15mm and 75mm and I'm set.

John

I have a couple on my gallery. Can I link in this thread to RFF gallery posts? I'm having a senior moment and can't remember the process. Thanks.

John

Thanks. Any pics would be great to see.

Is the vignetting software in Epson Raw effective for the time when you don't want it?

Cheers,

John

the epson raw software is quite nice - the only prob i have with it is that i yet could not make it run under linux.

this is a picture right out of the cam (only resized, no further touching).
as far as i remember, i used aperture 11.

Sebastel,

Can you repost that image after using the vignetting correction tool in Epson raw? It's fairly severe.

Thanks,

John

No worries. It looks like the lens picked out plenty of detail. Any others would be appreciated.

Wonderful shots! I do like the second portrait which also shows just how well the R-d1 handles at an iso of 800.

Yeh.. unfortunately the R-D1 only goes down to an iso of 200. ND filter comes in handy when trying to get a shallower DOF in bright daylight. I have modified a circular polarizer ring and UV ring to hold two polarizer glasses... gives me the same effect as a variable ND filter similar to the Singh-Ray Vari-ND filter. I'm still experimenting with it.....

I too find it a relief that the big bag o stuff with DSLR can stay home and I can walk out the door with the Epson + 1 lens around my neck with two more lenses in a small pouch strapped to my belt.

entered the epson raw vignetting corrected version of the picture.
the vignetting correction setting was at '10', a bit too strong for my taste.
resized in GIMP. no further corrections/manipulations applied.

cheers

Sabestel,

Thanks mate. I just wanted to see how effective the vignetting correction is. Not too bad in fact. I suppose it would really only be noticable in sky areas.

Thanks - John
