Two problems with M7 (rangefinder, flare)

Anyhow, if anyone know`s best way or place to fix infinity iligment and flare please post some recomendations informations 🙂

If you are going to London I believe there's a firm called CRR in Luton (near to london) that is a leica specialist repairer but you'd need to work out the timings. I'd suggest sending the camera to them then taking it back yourself to avoid the rangefinder being knocked out in the post.

... from what I've seen on other threads, you can help the flare problem by having your finder changed with the newer MP finder. I believe it costs $200-300 at DAG. I'm sure you could get the alignment fixed at the same time for little additional cost.

The finder upgrade can be done by any Leica dealer which will send it to the national Leica service (if there is one, otherwise to Solms). Afaik it costs $160 in USA, I had let my M6 done in Switzerland for CHF 300.00, took 10 days to do. The adjustment of the new RF unit was of course included.

The cheaper solution is Leicagoodies' SHADE which costs a fraction of it. The SHADE works, but don't expect too much. And it drops off easily with fat lenses (Summilux 75, Canon 50/1.2).

So what is the fastest solution to fix flare and miss aligment?
1 - Robert white?
2 - DAG?
2 - My local leica distributor (they will send it to solms)?
3 - london leica distributor?

btw my zeiss ikon has no rangefinder problems works perfectly on infinity, also no problems with flare! I mounted 50 lux asph and I love it 😀

Vlad,

The flare you see in the early M7 is the same as any VF from the M6 or M6TTL also. Later in the M7 production they added the condensor which the older Ms had again, just like they did in the MP.

If you are willing to take the time with Andy, you could send it to Leica USA in NJ under Andy's name and they would upgrade the finder and fix the infinity focus for free. If Andy bought it new and it is still within the Passport warranty, there will be no cost.

Best,

Ray

That's a good idea Ray. If it was under warranty they would fix the misalignment but will they replace the VF for free? I thought they were charging for that. 😕

Leica USA was upgrading the VF free of charge on the M7 models but not on the M6 or M6TTL. I had an early M7 which I had this done for the person that I was selling it to, prior to delivering the camera. Now my only film camera is my "beloved" M5.

If Andy (AKPTC) purchased it with the USA warranty, it should still be under the passport warranty and therefore eligible for both fixes free by him at Leica USA in NJ.

To me it would be worth a call to Andy and have him call Leica service in NJ.

Best,

Ray

Thanks for the info Ray, I didn't know that Leica was upgrading the M7 for free!

I just checked Warranty card, camera was bought in 12/12/05 therefore it is still in warranty, thought on the page were should be writen name and address of buyer is blank (not filled) does this mean I can fill this and take it to my local leica ditributor?

Warranty claims can only be made by submission of this warranty card which has been completed with date of puirchase, address and signature of the autorized photo dealer.
When submitting claims under warranty please return te leica M7 together with the warranty card and a decription of the claim to the leica agency.
Tourist may, if required, makes use of the agency of the country in which they are travelling by presenting the warranty card.

What the heck? 😀
