Two things, R-D1, Nikon

After reading a note on a Leica forum, about using the Nikon SB-800 flash on an M8, I decided to try it on my R-D1, in manual mode. Works fine, nothing seems fried, although setting up is a bit tedious.

Along the same lines, and more because I was messing around than anything else, I discovered that the Nikon DR-3 right-angle viewfinder screws right into the R-D1, and because it has an adjustable diopter built in, you can get a nice sharp focus. I don't know why you'd wwant to do this, but it works.

Good to know about the DR-3. I know that there are some Nikon eyepiece accessories that are a direct fit onto the R-D 1, but also that there are others that aren't (either because the threads are a different size, or because the accessory hits the body ridge below the R-D 1's eyepiece.)

It seems to be trial and error finding out what works, so thanks for trying this one.

Any Eyepiece accessories which fit the Nikon FM2 fit the R-D1 also . Diopters are the most popular

I can't, actually. I just read the note about the Leica, and I have an SB800 that I use occasionally with my D2x, although I don't do much flash at all. So I just slammed it on the R-D1, fiddled with the flash's very simple controls, and shot. Worked fine, but I won't use it much. But it does make much of the Nikon slave/flash capabilty available. I'm thinking of trying the ring flash next, although again, as with the right-angle finder, I'm not sure what I'd use it for...

I learned the hard way that that isn't always true. Nikon made an older style of diopter lens which does fit the FM2, but does not fit the R-D 1. This type of lens had a large metal rim; the thread is the right size, but the rim hangs upon the "shoulder" of the R-D 1 body below the eyepiece, preventing it from screwing in.

The later type of diopter lens has a thin plastic rim, and this one DOES fit the R-D 1.

Not trying to be disputatious, just warning people that Nikon accessories of the correct thread size still may not fit the R-D 1 because of physical interference. The only way to be sure is to try; that's why hearing from other people that a particular accessory definitely does fit is valuable.

I have a 1.0 Diopter one here listed to fit the FA FE2 FM2 FE and FM and it defiantely fits the R-D1 - I got it in the hope that it may mag the RF patch to make focussing easier (of course it doesn`t, it just corrects the Dioter and makes things blurry for my vision ;-) so I guessed that all the accessories may fit - thanks for the correction
