You know the story all too well...I was in town, just happened to be near the camera store...I need a battery anyway, so I'll just stop and look around...
I got to handle the RX1 and the Coolpix A. I'm a big RX100 fan.
Thoughts:
RX1 is beautifully designed, and really a quality piece of engineering...BUT...it's big enough that I kept wanting to lift it to my eye a là OVF/EVF. It's quite a large camera to be holding out at arms' length to shoot. It sure is nice looking though.
Coolpix A...I wanted to hate this, I really did, because I got the RX100 and it's super...BUT...the Coolpix A is a very nice camera. It also oozes quality, it's solid, and it's compact-enough that it'll fit into cargo pants pockets (but not pants pockets). The focus was a bit slower than I expected, though...my RX100 is quite snappy for focus. The big shocker, though, was how nice it looked and felt. I've seen the silver one online and it looked like any other consumer compact, but in real life, the grey/black is VERY nice.
I'll be interested to handle the Ricoh GR with the APS-C sensor, but Nikon can make a nice camera, and the Coolpix A did NOT feel like a consumer shooter.
Mustn't buy...mustn't buy...

Picked up a rx1 at the Sony store a while back. It really is a nice camera. I would put one of my existing ovf on it from one of my film cameras if I ever own one.. But I am more interesting in seeing what everyone else is coming out w/ by the end of the year.
Ricoh gr v w/ the converter to 21 has my interest level peaked. I am also hoping Ricoh comes out w/ a 40 fov. I think Matius mentioned it..
If Sony had released the rx1 w/ a 38-40 lenses I would have bought it. 40 is my preferred focal length after all the years of using a CL. When I go wide, I like wider than 28.

Ps that Sony evf is expensive

I got my RX1 last week and I am stunned how good it is. Have the EVF as well and for me now is the perfect digital camera. I was never really a lens changer anyway, would have preferred 28mm but just have to take a few steps back then no problem.
Is perfect now as well for me because it is so small I can go out with RX1 and my Linhof 612 in a pretty small bag
Just gives so many options.

I'm staunchly avoiding any fondling of the Sony RX1. From all reports, it is a superbly well made camera that feels like real quality, which would immediately give my wallet nervous twitches.
The Nikon A isn't available in Australia yet, so I'm in no danger of that temptation. As a huge Ricoh fan, and as someone who has longed for aps-c image quality in a GR size camera, I'll be slapping down plastic for the new GR sight unseen and body unfondled. Wait for the GR, David.
