I'm not sure whether this should be in the WTB, but if a moderator deems it then I'll make an ad instead. I went into....ughhh...Jessops, and asked for film cassettes but it turns out they dont even throw them away - they get paid to recycle them!!!

I realise that they dont cost a lot to buy new, and if I went to Poundland I might be able to buy a load of film cans (complete with film) even cheaper,

BUT:

Do any of you have a C-41 lab near you that still throws out/gives away the 35mm cassettes? I'm running low for bulk loading!



If someone could do me the huge favor next time they get a film developed and ask for all the cassettes (and actually get a bag full) I'll pay postage and a few pints on top!


(I'm talking about the metal film cassettes not the plastic things for storing film in!)

I'll start saving mine up for you, ooo - there's a printing factory 5 mins away that do all the chemists &c. around here too - I'll ask tomorrow or Wednesday.

You should be able to get dual concentric ones for your Kiev that last for ever, they are opened and closed by the baseplate latches, they only have felt doughnuts for the end piece seals. there are no Felt traps to scratch film, thought you will need a Watson loader or similar to operate the traps unless you have a dark room of changing bag as well as a bulk loader.

If you use a pair then the Kiev will be like a Rapid 35mm camera cassette to cassette (or 120 film reel to reel) with no rewinding. Think there are Ru dealers offering the Ru copies of the Contax dual concentrics 2nd hand.

Ru LTMs with a baseplate may have a similar system, (the real LTMs certaintly did) the Nikon removable baseplate cameras, all the the rgfrds, F and F2 had similar systems.

None of these cassettes were cross compatible except for the Contax/Kiev. The Leitz (LTM and M were only partially compatible and only mainstream models).

When I open a Ilford cassette with a swiss army (crown cap) bottle opener it is kind of 2nd hand, I managed to avoid drawing blood for a long time, you don't want any of these do you?

The Ru also had reusable felt light trap cassettes, if you PM your postal I may be able to find a few for Xmas, normally I remove their spools, as I lose things for my Kievs... I thought Jessops did new cassettes as late as last year.

Jessops cassettes are ridiculously priced for what they are, and I have one one metal refillable cassette for my zorki and they are a PAIN! I hate them, honestly I just can't stand trying to work them out.

As for drawing blood, the scar on my palm is from a film can 😀

Fair enough, I prefer re-using typical metal cassettes

Many of the metal ones cannot be reused as the tops are crimped on, and once opened they are no longer light tight. Especially the Kodak ones. They are an absolute ******* to open in the darkroom, as I dont like pulling the film through the felt trap any more often than I have to. I find the plastic ones with the screw on top are ok!

Yeah, I would just invest in some proper re-loadable cassettes that you can live with, and use them for years...
