Ultrawides on M9?

Hi,

Anyone with hands-on experience with ultrawides on M9?

I have a Viogtlander 15mm / 4,5 that I uses happily on a Epson RD-1. How will this lens perform on a M9? I have read that some of these ultrawides puts the rear nodal point to close to the sensor causing color and other distortions.

The CV15/4.5 files have a serious vignette and red corner problem, if you want to shoot color then you have to use Cornerfix software (free) to cope with this flaw. Or do the corrections yourself in PS in LAB mode. For me, this is not a major issue, but depends on your attitude towards postprocessing. I bought the Heliar after reading Sean Reids review, and was not disappointed. Excellent IQ on the M9, besides the mentioned issues.

The first lens I put on an M9 was a 21 Super Angulon and the color shifts were quite obvious on the LCD.

The 15/4.5 will have the "red edge" issues with the M9, but it can be fixed with CornerFix. It's best to code it as the 21/2.8 11134; that will fix most of the vignetting in camera. The CV 12/5.6 has stronger vignetting, but less of the "red edge" issue, and can be coded as the 21/2.8 as well.

Based on what I have seen, the Leica 21 Super Angulon has the worst color issues of any lens on the M9.

CornerFix will fix them all.

I bought a WATE together with my M8. So i don't miss the Full Frame that much. - What I was hoping for with M9 was a larger improvement on high ISO performance. Buying a M9 depends on corner performance with 'super wide lenses like the WATE and the Voigtländer Super Wide 15 mm 4,5 - which I also have - etc.

You don't have to use CornerFix with the WATE; it works perfectly on the M9. The corner performance is very good IMO. Not quite razor sharp at f/4 and 16mm, but its nice and sharp by f/5.6 and looks perfect at f/8.

No, not with the M9. For me, using Cornerfix or my PS action to fix the red corner issue is more acceptable than shooting with the huge WATE plus Frankenfinder combination.

all this seems a little bit edgy to me. There was a time where we didn't bother installing a super wide on any film camera.
I believe the time for curved sensors has come...

Have you tried to make your own CornerFix anti-vigneting profile for the 15/4,5?

I made my own for my 15/4.5 and 12/5.6. I just got a large piece of white posterboard and spraypainted one side neutral gray. I shot both sides and the gray worked better for making the profiles for me.

The technological difficulties surround that idea vastly exceed the severity of the problem. This is nothing that a better software correction cannot fix. Alternatively, altering lens design would be a better solution. Note that more modern retrofocal designs like that used in the WATE are not a problem.
